jasoninsd Is this location still valid? So many of the locations described in these old mags and guide books are no longer available… at least here in CA.

I was trying to figure out where south of Fairburn they're describing. The agate beds are actually East of Fairburn. There is private property south of Fairburn that I do occasionally get access to...so maybe I'm in the vicinity of where they're describing. The other thing that's wrong on that map, Fairburn isn't on Hwy 40 like they show. LOL

The town on the map north of the site is Farmingdale. Does that make more sense?

The town on the map north of the site is Farmingdale. Does that make more sense? OMG! Apparently I need to go back to remedial reading classes...or get some more sleep at night! LOL So...this map is actually trying to show Railroad Buttes location...which is just south of Farmingdale...exactly where the map is showing. However...they still have the Hwy wrong. It's actually Hwy 44 that goes out to Farmingdale from Rapid City. I think I got visually stuck on the Hwy 40...which is about halfway between Rapid City and Fairburn. (At least that's excuse for reading things wrong earlier! LOL) I have found some Fairburns out at Railroad Buttes...some nice ones actually.

Got to get out yesterday with my kids and grandson yesterday for a couple of hours and found these. Not great, I'm still on the fence about the first one... Thanks for looking! 🙂

Only found this little guy, we went out for about 3 hours. One of my son's found a better one- and he's only gone around 3 times! 🙂 Oh well...I'll try to get a picture of it and put it on. Thanks for looking!

I really can't believe the temperatures we've had both in September...and now into October! I still vividly remember the blizzard of 10/3/13...where snow was up over the top of the doors - with no way to get out of the house! Don't get me wrong...I'm not hoping for that crap! LOL - I'm seriously enjoying the actual "Fall" weather the year as the last several years it seemed like we went from high summer temps to immediate deep freeze - with no "transition"!

There's some amazing photos on there! Did you happen to see the picture of the "Custer Queen"? “The Custer Queen. This 53.5 Lb. State Park agate is the largest single pattern Fairburn Agate yet discovered. It was discovered in the 1950’s by Harvey Lancaster of Custer. For over 20 years this agate was in a private collection in Minnesota, until Roger Clark of Appleton, Wisconsin purchased this specimen with the sole intention of bringing it back to the Black Hills. Donated in 2004 by Roger Clark and the Tom Estes Memorial Fund.”

I seen em all! I love the agate that is surrounding the amethyst! If I stumbled across that out in the field I’d faint from the vapors! I actually have several pieces of Scott’s Rose Quartz purchased about 20 years ago when they used to have I big corner space at Quartzite. They didn’t have no Fairburns though lol.

I found a Teepee Canyon Agate with Amethyst in it this last summer when holajonathan was over visiting. I posted pics in the Teepee Canyon Agate thread I think. It's also the same nodule that tried to cut my finger off! LOL - The Amethyst in mine wasn't as pronounced as the one in the Fairburn...but it was still Amethyst! LOL

How deep does banding go on fairburns? Most look like if you tried to polish, you’d lose most of the fortifications. Is that typical? Or if you cut them open, banding goes all the way through.
