Has anyone ever dealt with www.mailordergems.com? Their website seems a little sketchy (especially at the home page), but their prices are awesome. They're also one of the only places I've found that sell corundum by the pound at a price that's not in the stratosphere (bonus points!).

Don't have much for me, but they do have a lot of tumbling rock.

Haven't heard of them before.
I would email them first and verify they have the corundum in stock. The copyright at the bottom of the page is 1998-2011, so it appears they're not updating their site.
The prices are good, but I dunno. I clicked on some of their faceted stones and they are all lab created which isn't disclosed until the very bottom of the page. You could always place a small order and see what happens.

I had messaged them previously about some tumbling rough. I asked for actual photos (didn't trust their website). They asked for my phone number (for some reason). I sent them my phone number and they never sent me photos.
If you buy something and have a good experience...please let us know.

most of their products are as stated but you better know your rock. their rocks are clean but not the highest quality. i.e. ruby in this or that more this than ruby. emerald the same. sometimes they will give mohs and some times not. however their bogo sales are great most agets good same with jaspers. most of the rocks are as advertised. the rock shed's products may be a little more $ and dirty. but a better, bigger, & more info of the product is outstanding ! and the r.s. is a family owned store. gems- big corp. this reply over 1 yr. old sorry ! I'll stay with r.s. however buy from gems time to time because of pricing!

I decided to do a test order with the one mineral I can pretty much identify every time: 1lb of "ruby, corundum, rough". First red flag: the charge went to a company called Jemini Supply. On the other hand, no other weird charges popped up on my card, so there's that. When it came in, it was exactly 16 oz, despite everything being very muddy with bits of grass in the mix. A 24-hour tumble with soap cleaned them up decently and brought the weight down to 15.9 oz. I went through scientifically, looking at hardness, fluorescence, magnetism, and SG. 3.2 oz proved to be non-corundum minerals, including hematite, garnet, and apatite. I could only prove 10.1 oz was actually corundum, and most of those seem to be sapphire colors instead of actual ruby. The remaining 2.6 oz were pebbles each weighing >1g, some of which may show the right crystal features, but they're not worth individual testing. Bottom line: you really do get what you pay for, and I won't be paying them again.
