My 12lb lortone motor keeps stopping. I’ll go check on the tumbler and it’s not moving at all. I unplugged it and waited an hour and it stopped again 7 hours later. I dismantled the motor and it seems to spin fine without binding.
Thoughts? Over heating and then self cooling by shutting off?
I have 2 qt-12 neither have done this before. My belt is not slipping and tension seems fine. Barrels are full but nothing I don’t normally do.

How old is it? It may just be a bad motor. When you turn it on after being unplugged does it have any torque?

Is the motor very hot? Are the bushings gummed up?

I was having the same issue with my 33b. Cleaned it, put on a new belt, replaced the bearings, did everything I could think of. It would run fine with no barrels or one barrel but not both. I finally got a motor off of ebay for $33 and it's been running ever since.

Thanks for the link. I called them and they are out. Likely will have to wait until Lortone is back open.

Grant saxplayer, you may want to try Minnesota Lapidary Supply. The motor is listed in their catalog for an okay price ($20 more than Rock Shed), so maybe you'll luck out with them having it in stock. I looked at Kingsley North, and they are out of stock. Rocktumbler.com looks like they might have it (I could add it to the cart), but their price is pretty darn expensive. Just depends how badly you need it.

I did call TRS and it sounds like they may have something brewing soon.

I recall your discussion about copper bushings that you got for your QT tumbler(s), but I was a bit confused at the end of the day as to what you used. Do you have a specific item that you can point to? I seem to recall you found something that was a direct replacement for the plastic ones. Thanks.

Hmm.. I oiled up the motor at the 2 oil points... cleaned up whatever gunk I could see physically and it's run for 3 days now without issue. here's to hoping it's not bad down the road. Next time I will probably try the mineral spirits thing once and see what happens I'll get a new motor eventually I suspect.

Go to flange bushing , you will see list of sized. what lortone do you have and how old. the model # QT6 or QT12 will not help. The shaft size is the same 1/2 " but Lortone has cut the Hole in the base different from time to time. If you PM me we can discuss or open another Thread

Thanks. I will send you a PM. I’m kinda interested now too lol. I figured I wouldn't be the only one. If he replies to my PM, I'll see if he'll just add the info to this thread. Heck, it certainly relates to working on the tumbler and making sure it's turning optimally.

The 2nd stopped a couple weeks ago for me so I tried it again and it works but I'm soaking overnight anyway to clean it. I guess I'll try it also on a few other motors I have sitting around. Glad I didn't throw them out. Thanks again David

Yes, The Mineral Spirits work . it is not a Fix all. remember a motor sucks in all the dust , dirt and whatever else. all of it sticks and over oiling will harden and cause it to be sluggish. This was a trick my father taught me Thanks Sal
