I hope someone can help, I got 2 awesome Indonesian Coral slabs this week, but they smell terrible like gasoline or kerosene or something similar - could be disgusting saw oil I just don't know. I tried soaking in 409 for an hour or so, that didn't seem to help so I ran them through the dishwasher on a heated cycle with my dishes. They still stink so I soaked them a few hours in Super Iron Out which didn't help now they're soaking in hot soapy water.
Any tips?

They probably used diesel fuel for the lubricant, I would try a degreaser like simple green. Or, some Dawn soap in really hot water. Then place out in the sun to dry.

I cut a bunch of small Tahoma rough and the slabs stunk. I think some material absorbs lubricant more than other material. I tried kitty litter and detergent without success. The cabs I made from the slabs don't stink. I decided to keep the slabs in a wooden box until I was ready to work on them. My design area is where my computer is located and I don't like having to deal with the smell.

Any tips? cook it out in a toaster oven... yep, it worked for me on some palm root slabs. needless to say i had to buy my wife another one for the house cause the old one will reek forever

Hot water and dawn soap then a week buried in kitty litter. I recommend NEW kitty litter otherwise your kitties (if you have them) might give you a whole new set of odors to deal with

Many places that I collect fossil coral also has bitumen (crude oil). It stinks. I have never tried to clean them, but my first thought would be automotive engine cleaner, which is formulated to cut thru oil.

Some international suppliers soak their stones in things like paraffin or linseed oil to give them a better luster. The paraffin in particular can take on a oily rancid odor.
