After a failed attempt by Fedex, and a long ocean voyage, my new (older than me) Highland Park E-5 10" saw has finally arrived. It appears to be in pretty good shape, and everything is still there aside from one screw on the clamp and the brass slide rod. Sadly, the arbor bearings have just a touch of radial play, and do not give me a sense that they are long for this world. I'm curious if anyone knows what size bearing it takes. If not, I will just pull some measurements and reverse engineer from there.
I'll post some pics of it once I complete the clean up and repaint.

Take one of the bearings to a local bearing supply shop, they can match it no problem.

Take one of the bearings to a local bearing supply shop, they can match it no problem. Unfortunately the closest bearing shop would involve about 8 hours on a plane to get there and back.

Slide the pulley off and you should be able to see the bearing seal which will have a brand name and part number on it. Write it down and call a bearing supply company and they will be able to cross reference it to any brand you want, and/or give you the dimensions of the bearing so you can find one if they can't.

The closest place that would likely have a decent industrial supply would be somewhere in the Philippines. There just isn't industry here. It's pretty much all tourism and military

If you get me a part number I can have it shipped to you Nik. I appreciate the offer, but now that I have it apart and have taken a few measurements, they are a really common bearing. I will be able to get them shipped directly from a multitude of sources. The arbor housing is a constant bore from end to end, so I might go with a double row or even a roller bearing on the blade end to stiffen it up a bit. If I wind up feeling spicy, I might just install a grease fitting as well.

Just for anybody else that happens to be looking in the future, the bearings are 5/8 (0.625") id, 1-3/8 (1.374") od, and 11/32 (0.344") thick, but the thickness is not a critical dimension, a 1/2" wide bearing will fit without any problem.

$20 later, a new set of bearings is on its way. I went with a 0.5" wide bearing with a little higher load rating than the original set. The more exotic double row or roller bearing idea went out the window once I saw the prices.

After a few days soak in jet fuel, and much scraping and scrubbing, the 50 something years of crusted on shmoo, paint, and rock snot have relinquished their grasp on the various bits of the saw. Then it is just a matter of waiting for the new bearings and .040 MK 303 blade.

That should make it fly through the rocks. Why is it that clean machines seem to run better? Have you every tried slicing marine shells. You can produce some wild patterns. But wear a mask; everyone has a different story about the dangers of inhaling shell dust.

But wear a mask; everyone has a different story about the dangers of inhaling shell dust. I hope it's a happy little machine after all the work that I've put in. I've only cut a handful of shells over the years, I think I just like rocks better.
