There was a discussion started in this thread about possibly getting an RTH meet up together in S. Dakota to hunt teepee canyon and fairburn agates. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/91914/rocksI'm thinking after labor day would be best considering the time of year already. Probably several advantages ($$$) to that timing too. Anyone else interested in this?

If I can make it I'll be there, but I wouldn't count on it. I have to work to make money for more rocks and I can't do that if I'm not at work!

I would absolutely love to go. For us it all depends on money and the work situation and we won't really know till late summer. I'm back to work only about 10% of what I was before Covid and working under the table, while my wife is still furloughed. Her company has mentioned August potential restart but now with the supposed Covid flare up who knows...

If you do make it to the Buffalo Gap / Fairburn area (or the agate beds in NW Nebraska) I won't guarantee you'll find a killer Fairburn agate but there's so much cool material (pet wood, jasper, prairie agate quartz etc.) you can certainly fill a few buckets with fun material. Custer is a neat little town and Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Jewel Cave and Wind Cave are right in the vicinity. If you hit Rushmore the Rock Shed is 10 minutes down the hill in Keystone.

After sleeping on this I think we may be trying to get something together with too little time to really do it right, especially with the pandemic still going on.
I'm bowing out for a late summer meet up but want to keep the idea alive for maybe late spring next year.

I'm bowing out for a late summer meet up but want to keep the idea alive for maybe late spring next year. I was going to suggest that also. However, if anyone is itching to come out this way anyway just get in touch with me and I'll either meet up with you or give you directions. You might have to twist my arm to go rockhounding... 😁

I'd second what Mike said, if anyone is looking for directions etc I don't mind sharing the little i know. Mid spring to early Summer (April - June) might be a better time anyway, we got a lot of moisture early this year so now it's a challenge to find bare ground through all the grass. Plus now that it's drying out the fire danger is going up fast. And i went out to teepee yesterday for some relief from the heat, but it had to be 90+ even up in the hills. Rocks were too hot to hold lol.
Re the pandemic, hardly anyone in this area even acknowledges it's an issue (unless they're prying for more govt handouts). Not that that decreases the risk of course.

That actually sounds like fun. We may be up for that depending on how things are going.
