Judging from all the pudding in the saw it's due for another cleaning. Seems I just cleaned it the other day. Randy, you would make a great proctologist.

Yes, it's a good one but unfortunately, I was in a hurry to get the photo before work and just pulled it out of the saw and it was fairly dripping with oil and crud in the photo. You'd think I'd only post clean, polished specimens!

I believe those fortifications form in voids created by the turd drying out and forming cracks. They must have been buried shortly thereafter by some kind of flood event which could have been caused by seasonal fluctuations or alluvial deposition. I can tell that the deposits I find these in are very much like beach gravels or what you would see in alluvial deposits.

That last one is extremely interesting as it looks like it has "growth rings" around the outer edge!
*When I haven't eaten enough fiber, I've had a few that "felt" like they had growth rings!!
I really don't know the technical name for that little "nub" of rock that gets left by the saw when cutting slabs...but in this case, I suppose we should just call it a dingle-berry! LOL

That last one is extremely interesting as it looks like it has "growth rings" around the outer edge! Jason, I've noticed those rings on the outer parts of specimens for quite a while and I'm reluctant to think they are growth rings of a large branch because it's so huge. So far the best thing I can come up with is it's a layer of a tough fungus that grew on the turd like the way they grow on tree trunks now days. I don't know what else it might be but it is a common feature seen on these specimens.

Interesting conclusion (or theory) on the fungus! For lack of a better analogy...I was thinking it was being added onto like a jawbreaker. Layers. I was wondering if a certain mineral was leeching into the soil surrounding these agates...and just building up different layers as time went on.

I also notice that these layers are very much like what I see on a lot of Wyoming stromatolite. They are growth layers but I don't know if they were seasonal or what. I'll have to dig up some photos for comparison.
