My lap mostly died today. I must have daily computer and Word access for work. Drove around to find a new lap top. Geek Squad had no appts. today to transfer files from old computer to new one. Cancelled a medical and car appt tomorrow to get files transferred at their earliest appt. Office could not verify my account (after 1.5 hours on phone with one disconnect), so I sent an email to their advanced support team. Was told there was a 2-3 day response time. It took about an hour and password reset with internet provider to get my home network to connect to the new laptop.
I have been transferring critical files to new computer via SD card.
Been awake since 3:00 AM, thanks to my cat.
On the plus side, this lap top has a larger screen than my old one. It has a CD/DVD drive, which is rare, but which I need. It also has a SD slot. The cost was $100.00 over max budget, but I will not need to purchase an external CD?DVD Drive or SD card reader.
Now, going to continue to transfer files, install PSE and see what happens.

Sounds like a rough day. At least we don't need to reformat the hard drives once or twice a year like 30 years ago.

Another rough day planned today. My employer gave me the day off to get new computer working. I have to have computer acces daily for emails and schedule changes for work. As of now, Microsoft locked me out of new computer. They set a password and did not let me know what it is. Well, they might have sent it to an old email account, which I no longer have. I am receiving emails from Microsoft at another email account. Checked spam on that account and found nothing from Microsoft. Just lot of Viagara sale options, other items I cannot share here, lol. I can still use the old one, if I hold the power cord in place. If I move the computer and am not holding the power cord in, it shuts off. I have had to restart 10 times so far today. Had to cancel Geek Squad appt., as there is nothing they can do to finish transerring all the files I could not from old lap top to new one, if the new one is locked. So this person, who was a computer expert in the 1990's, is on their own for now.
Appreciate any comments form anyone who has done this before. Thanks

Not to be flip since we've all been there. Consider it a learning experience. Biggest mistake, I've made over the years is not doing some kind of a regular file backup. The other is having all passwords saved somewhere other than on the computer. I'm retired but spend a lot of time on the internet. I don't use a smart phone, just my computer. Last year we had some day plus planned power outages for fire prevention. After the first one, I bought a flip phone and a tablet. Trying to set up all the sites I visit on the tablet was more work than it needed to be. My computer remembers the passwords for most of the sites I visit but that doesn't do any good on another computer or tablet.
I worked on computers for 40 years and never had neck problems. When I retired, I started to have them. I had a work lap top that was taken home at night. I went to a neck care class and was told that one of the major causes of neck problems was looking down at a lap top for an extended period. At work, the lap top was hooked into a docking station with external monitor and keyboard. I did that to my laptop at home, no docking station but the other externals. My lap top was 4-5 years old and was built with extra capacity, processor and memory. My wireless connection became unacceptably slow so I needed to upgrade and since I was using it as a desktop, I bought a desk top with double internet, a solid state hard drive and a lot of memory. It flies and was much cheaper than a comparable lap top. Extended warranties are much cheaper and longer than those for a lap top. I still have the lap top and the passwords for the tablet, laptop and tablet are all the same, so when the power is out, I'm set.

Still working at it. I had been saving the most important files on (labeled) flash drives weekly. Then my work days/hours increased about the same time my old computer started having major problems. Yesterday, I decided to open some of the folders I had copied to SD card and downloaded to new computer. I was very disappointed when a very important file was not in the associated folder. Only about 1/3 of the items were in that folder. It was my work folder.
Will try to get old computer up and running again to copy remaining items from work folder. I must submit some reports on Monday.

Geek Squad finished transferring everything (well almost) from old computer to new one. I have the hard drive, in case any files are missing. I dropped both off Saturday AM. Picked up late this AM.

Hopefully all is well with the computer now? Technology is just like my brother in law; great when it works
