We lost our calico cat several years ago, it was 21 years old. Patches liked to play fetch for hours at a time and picked the game up all by herself. One day I tossed her favorite toy (wadded up cigarette pack ) across the room when she left it in front of my chair and she came back with it and laid it at my feet and sat there staring at me with her eyes all big and black and intense. I threw the thing again and it was game on for the rest of the 21 years. Never saw another cat that would play the game like that. She liked to ride in the car and boat, when she saw the overnight bag being set by the front door she was sitting right next to it and would beat me to the car. she would jump in and be asleep up in the back window before the wife had locked the house and climbed in. People were always asking if that was a real cat we had in the back window and how we got it to ride in the car like that, I would tell them same as the grandkids, stop for ice cream every 50 miles, wife always shared a cone with her. She slept most of the time in the boat except when we were running, then she would climb on the seat between us so she could have the wind in her face. She didn't care to be close to fish flopping around in the boat, would relocate to the back deck an look concerned until we threw them back in. After a couple years I realized the cat was making different sounds for the different things going on in the yard, squirrels, rabbits, birds and people, and I would always say OK , I see it. Made a lot of money from house guests that ask me who I was talking to when I said that, I would tell them not to bet me on a rabbit or Squirrel or what ever because the cat just told me what was out there .The cat always laid on her little blanket in the front window guarding the yard so to speak. Sorry about being so long winded, our Patches was a very unique little animal and I still miss her very much !

An old man I knew, long gone, used to say "a man has never known love till he's had a dog." I reckon there's something to that. Other than to add "... or a cat," I cannot disagree.

Something along the lines of 21 years is what we had hoped to get.

I liked everything you painted a picture of here...and I chuckled out loud on the "ice-cream" bit!

An old man I knew, long gone, used to say "a man has never known love till he's had a dog." I reckon there's something to that. I nearly forgot: “Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside a dog, it is too dark to read.” (Groucho Marx)

Sometimes you don’t want to be “in good company,” when that would mean a downer for someone else. I need jasoninsd or miket to find a killer Fairburn for some vicarious joy. No pressure, guys.

If I would've known this, I would've tried harder yesterday. Got skunked for Fairburns when I went down to the River. However, 30 pounds of Laguna Lace (apparently a "new" vein) showed up yesterday afternoon in the mail that I'll be slabbing today. Small consolation compared to a Fairburn, but it has some decent fortifications...

Oh stephan , I am so sorry. RIP Winston. We never get them long enough. Seeing posts like this remind me how quickly time passes; it's already been 5 years (!) and I still expect my good boy Simon to bounce up onto the bed. I know it's a sad day when I'm wishing I could smell something akin to a sewage lagoon in my face. We lost him during a badly needed dental surgery. Ironic. On a less crap note, if any Fairburns show up, can I join in the vicarious living?

This is him from August, displaying multiple talents: DSC_0831_Look, grandpa, look! I can catch my tail AND lick my nose at the same time. That's good, right? by sdttds, on Flickr Sorry for your loss too. I still think I see Bear, a dog who passed over a decade ago, and was also quite fragrant. And, of course you can join in any vicarious Fairburn joy.

We lost Lizzie last year, a tough, little Morkie that overcame quite a bit. She originally belonged to our next door neighbor but spent a lot of time at our home, including showing up at our outside bedroom door at 5:30 AM most mornings! On July 3, 2013 they asked if we'd keep her over night, they never came for her. After 6 months I called the man said "She's ours", he started to make excuses and I hung up on him, she was ours. She had allergies, she had an enlarged heart, they never even attempted to help her. We did and she lived until March of 2020. She went everywhere we went, with her sidekick, our border collie. She hiked, went rockhounding, took long Jeep rides. I put this on the cover of a calendar I do each year:

Well, we just laid our little boy, Winston to rest. He had a rock-cat’s funeral. He was buried with His favorite Moqui marble, and has two markers: a slab of Graveyard Point as his headstone, and “his” tourmaline in matrix.

My heart really does go out to you and your family Stephan. The markers were a beautiful thought as an addition for memoriam.

Thanks jasoninsd and Pat . I still miss him, but it’s a less crippling feeling. There is a sense of closure.

I'm writing this with tears and a sad heart. I've had this girl for 16 years. She was found in a gutter and someone had cut her with a razor all over her body. She was very young, way too young to be taken from her mom. I nursed her wounds and fed her and miraculously she survived and was named Karma, for my wish was whoever did that to her would find theirs She didn't handle the move to Minnesota very well and had been gradually getting worse. She layed down earlier today and peacefully passed. When people say “its just a cat” they just don’t understand. RIP Karma.
