I started the first batch in the UV18 at 5:30pm. I've checked it a couple times. I had the water level right...but didn't think I did, so I added more water...then it was too much...so I added a bit more grit and that solved the problem. Good looking gray color and rocks turning the way they should.
I DID learn the UV18 doesn't like to be ran without the lid on! I discovered if I hold/stabilize the bowl with one hand, it keeps the bowl from spinning without the lid. I also learned without the lid on, the bottom washer likes to ride up the post...and if you're not paying attention, the washer will end up in the bowl! I had to keep running it and watching for the washer to surface again so I could get it out! LOL Live and learn!
Oh...and I forgot to take "before" pics on the UV18 load! I did take pics of the load I'm putting into the Model B though...

I think there is supposed to be a wingnut securing the bowl to the frame, and another wingnut for the lid. Mine is in storage. Maybe some of the other UV-18 users can clarify. I believe mine was assembled correctly. There's a spacer washer and a lock washer that's "under" the lid (as well as on top of the lid under the wingnut). When the lid is off and the vibe is running, that spacer washer and the lock washer vibrate up the post...and then off the post into the bowl! I just wasn't paying attention - I was staring at the rocks turning - it's mesmerizing! LOL Edit - now I understand what you're saying. I am curious to know if there's supposed to be another nut holding that bowl down...

I owe you a MASSIVE thank you!!! As soon as I read your post, I googled UV-18 parts list. Sure enough there is supposed to be a nut on there. I quickly ran out to the garage, and thankfully I had a nut that would fit the post! Now it runs just fine without the lid on! LOL (Who woulda thunk it!) Thanks for posting the link to Joshua's thread showing the pics. Seriously, thank you so much for letting me know!

IKR? Like driving down a road at night during a snowstorm. The flakes just dance a slow, wide circle in the glow of your headlights. Mesmerizing, indeed!

And your wife is absolutely correct- I am definitely an enabler. Along with one or two others here on RTH. As a matter of fact, I'm thinking that you might be, too, Jason... 😁
Maybe you were not aware, but there are many of those (enablers) on this forum! But we do have our redeeming qualities.

Jason, I think know you are right. Just think, what were you doing with your time before you found us??
Gosh, and you have only been here for what, 3 months? Doesn't take long for us to become family.

Hey! Glad my post was helpful. Since that post I've started covering the bowl with a piece of waxed paper to keep the lid and pad cleaner and drier. I think it was RocksInNJ who suggested using Saran wrap, and it seems to be helpful.

Great idea!

That means there is a 12 step program for us. RPA (rock polishers anonymous), perhaps? I was absolutely kicking myself for not taking the before pics!!! I did on the Rotary batch, but not the Vibe! Darn it! I have one before pic of a prairie agate that's in the vibe mix. It's about 4". It'll have to be a "representative" photo of the batch. LOL I don't think anyone on this forum could take twelve steps before picking up another rock! LOL I will definitely be posting the after pics. I took a sneak peek at a couple of the rocks tonight, including the big prairie agate. I'm excited at the results after just one day. The vibe started Thursday 4pm. I'll rinse and rerun tomorrow at noon as we have a family gathering later in the afternoon. I'm going to refresh and run the 120/220 SiC for another two days in the vibe as I have quite a few large rocks in the tumble. The Model B started running at 4pm tonight as I had to run over to the Rock Shed and grab course grit. I'll let it run until next Friday and check it then. Here's the before pics. The large prairie and the other prairie are in the vibe. Both of those rocks had their pictures taken wet. I'm pretty sure I have a couple more individual pics from before, but I can't remember for sure what went in. I'll compare once I do the rinse. The rotary batch is a lot of bubble gum agates.

I like rocks all smooth and shiny. But when I tried it, I got all whiny.
When 5:00pm rolled around, and they still weren’t done, I was glad I could cab and be done while I was still young!
Enjoy !

I like the contrast in the fourth one, but this one looks like there's a clown inside trying to get out. Nice rocks, Jason, can't wait to see them polished to perfection..

I keep calling this one my "Faberge Egg" prairie agate! LOL I was seriously in awe of what this one looked like after just 24 hours...and what it felt like! I'll be tapping my fingers for the next two and a half days. As this was my first batch, I was sooo nervous about putting this one in as I didn't know how the tumble would treat it. But I flipped a coin, and in it went! LOL
