if you go way back Tahoma was origianlly call agate ! this contest needs to be more specific i think jasper but not picture jasper ect ,not ocean jasper or poppy jasper !!!! Thanks for the feedback Roy - I don't disagree with you on any single point you made - that's the horror of common names especially in the lack of clear scientific data on a material. All we are left with is how is it being sold? Just on Ebay alone Tahoma "jasper" yields more results than with agate. Right now it is day 13 and we have one entry so far. I'm not worried - we always see a lull after a large contest - but I also don't want to give the contest new controls that the theme selector and I did not hash out before the launch. Happily, for our contest the voters control the outcome. If they think an entry doesn't fit the theme they can pass over it and vote for something else. It's no different in my mind than if the theme were "red" and someone enters "yellow." That being said I will try to use this as a learning experience and make sure we provide more clear definition for the broad themes going forward.

I really don't know... Not a very scientific approach but I would tend to lean towards the inclusive side because a search for Tahoma Jasper does produce results. if you go way back Tahoma was origianlly call agate ! this contest needs to be more specific i think jasper but not picture jasper ect ,not ocean jasper or poppy jasper !!!! If we were sticking to true jaspers, I understand no OJ, since that is a rhyolite, but why exclude picture jasper and poppy jasper? I thought most of those are true jaspers. For PJ, Morgan Hill (and nearby) and Mariposa varieties certainly seem to be.

OJ and PJ kind of stand on their own...

OJ and PJ kind of stand on their own... Can't argue with that. So what we're saying is they're ringers....

I apologize for creating a stir with the overly broad theme for this month. Honestly, I have very little knowledge about makeup of rocks and what knowledge I have heavily relies on what a material is sold as. so my assumption was that the deciding factor would be that any material with trade name as jasper would work. I knew it would cover a wide spectrum of material and potentially include some that may not be jasper by definition. but my hope was that anyone who wanted to participate would likely have material that fits in the theme. if I ever have another chance to choose the theme I will make sure it has a narrower scope.

Thereās no way you did anything wrong! Mike said his theme will be rocks when he wins, and I hope he does. This is gonna be a great contest, if we all get off our collective back end and make some cabs!!

Heck no. If it was the "Gemmological Society of the World" contest maybe we could get picky, this is a bit of fun between like minded people.

This is from Oregon. From what I've read its outside of q town called Prineville Yup, just east of Prineville up below the rimrock along the north side of Ochoco Reservoir. It is more often called "Rim jasper" around here (though "Bat Cave" certainly better fits around Halloween time). The floor deposit material with the creamy layering was dug out many decades ago, though I hear that some people still find small pieces in the talus slope below. If you go, be sure to get good directions, as the area is sprinkled with private properties that you'll want to avoid trespassing. Nice job on the cab, BTW!

No worries sir! "Jasper" is one of the most prolific materials in all of the lapidary hobbies and the theme is a good one that should easily draw a lot of entries. We're coming off a record contest and there is almost always a bit of a lull following heavily participated in contest. Nothing to worry about at all - going forward we'll tighten things up before contest launch and we'll be good to go. My problem is laziness and bad time management skills I do plan on getting a cab entered soon - hopefully by the middle of next week
