Back in September Teenie, wife, and I visited Jasper Beach in Maine only to be told there is no jasper on Jasper Beach. So maybe this is a picture of rhyolite...Rocket

An expert will have your answer, surely. But in my experience the shine that you have on this stone indicates more Jasper (hardness). Maybe with a macro lens it could be determined better. You got a great polish on it never the less!

Hi Rocket. To me that does look like a Rhyolite or Trachyte. I'm not from that area not even from the US so I don't have any idea what rocks can be found there. You certainly got a great shine on it.

What other goodies did you get from Jasper Beach?

rocket in California we have two moonstone beaches. Neither has any moonstone. One has "moonstone" agates, the other has jagged rocks that "look like the surface of the moon."

On the other hand, I did once go to a "moonstone beach". Didn't look for any moonstones, thinking it was "just one of those names". Well, guess what?? Now I always look!

I had planned to visit Jasper beach this year. Did not make it but will, for sure, next year! Nice looking jasper/ rrhyolite. I understand it is best to visit at low tide. I will give report when I make the trip. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Jasper is silicon dioxide made opaque by contaminants. Rhyolites are extrusive volcanic rocks with lots of silica (thats what makes them polish, and clearly those with higher silica will take a better polish). In the vernacular of the layman jaspers have cache and rhyolites sound mundane. Hence many pretty rhyolites get given the name of jasper and the line between them is confused to the rockhound and purchaser. Enjoy the beach, collect the pretty rocks and in the end your enjoyment will not be affected by the distinction.
