I've been resaerching a replacement for my ancient TV5 and have mostly decided on a UV-10 to replace it. I'm curious how loud it is. My TV 5 makes quite a racket and can be heard through the garage door into the house and driveway. Is the UV-10 similar? I've ruled out the Lot-O because I don't want to lug a 50lb block into the house before work everyday during the summer heat. My garage will fry a tumbler in late afternoon

It’s loud but not that bad? I run mine in my garage and you can hear it barely on the other side of the wall but no one upstairs hears it.
I have 2 small children so what I consider loud might be different than you haha.

I don't have the UV-10, but I can tell you the UV-18 is a bit louder than I was expecting. I just started a new batch the other day. I was out at the back fence (3/4 of an acre away) talking with my mother. We could hear the vibe clear out there. The wind wasn't blowing, so that made a difference. I can also say I can't talk on my cell phone in the garage with the vibe running...and my wife has to speak louder than her "normal" speaking voice for me to hear her in the garage. She'll say something, I'll say, "What?", she'll repeat it, and I'll say "Stop yelling at me!"...I'm sure she finds that cute...I can tell by the glaring eyes and frown she quickly displays!

WOW seriously? Man. I debated getting the uv18 instead of 10 and I think I’m happier about my decision now.
If you fill it with fish gravel as cushioning it is relatively quiet in my opinion.

My wife swears it's louder with this batch than the last one. I had a couple large rocks in that batch, but no real large ones in this batch. I've got ceramic media in it, so I'm not sure why the noise difference. I was going to say "my wife swears"...and just leave it like that, but I don't want her swearing AT me! LOL

LOL Install "Decibel - Threshold Sound Meter" by Anirudh Sharma on your phone (or any other sound meter app). Then you can scientifically debunk that theory next time (I'm in no way affiliated with the maker of the app, I just like it because it's simple and works.)
Edit: My Lot-O Twin measures 74db 4" away with the screen facing the vibe

Ok. I just did. Mine registered 98.7db. Wow!!! Dang, time to don some ear protection! That's a lot higher than I would have imagined a UV to be, since Duke did his decibel test on Lot-O, UV-10, UV-18. Might even have had a UV-45 there.

It's sitting right next to the Model B, which is also running, but the Model B can't be contributing to that high number. I was a bit surprised to see it was that high...

I just watched that. Pretty amazing. So, what the heck could be causing the noise level in mine? Not enough media? I think it's maybe 15-20% media...probably closer to the 15...

Edit: or stand by it and measure it near your ear, would be more precise

94.6db the way he set it up...93(something) by my ear...it was hard to read the screen like that!

94.6db the way he set it up...93(something) by my ear...it was hard to read the screen like that! Try 50% media/smalls and report back. Great thread with widely differing results. My lot-o is about 50% media/smalls right now

I'm definitely trying that next batch to go through the vibe. I've gotta get that noise level down or I'll never be able to sneak it into the house rather than out in the garage without my wife noticing! LOL

Wow those are some high decibel readings. I'll check my TV5 next time it runs. It can be very loud too sometimes. I noticed it tends to be loudesr when the bowl isn't full and the slurry is a little thick. The tumbler I'd really like to get is the rotary QT66 but wow those Lortones are seriously out of stock...worldwide. Anyone know if the plant is actually open or is it on furlough?

I'm told if you order one (pay for it) you should get one in about 11 days. Don't quote me on that, I didn't do it myself.

EricD Oooo I'm intrigued! Is this direct from Lortone? I'll dive right in if so.

Will do thanks! I tried to call them a couple times today but they never answered the phone. I'll try again tomorrow.
