I wouldn't use them without the pads. You will see as you go that the angle is better with the pads and you will get more use out of your disks. Hi-Tech has them and they are the same price as the rock shed. I think Kingsley also had them.
Also make sure you dry your disks out and not stack them wet. Put a the felt one in the bag after use
If you have any questions ask away!

And maybe next birthday, and next Christmas, as well. What Tela said. Treat her right, she is something special. You will learn patience, grasshopper... I'm not going to let her read that first part there! LOL I try every day...she's patient, I'm not...she's the yin, I'm the yang...she's the Beauty, I'm the Beast...she's the level-head, I'm the knucklehead... Soon: you are the cabber and she is the cabbe. Not a dumb girl. She will get the first pick of your stones.

I've got one piece of Lapis that I have the free-form cut out ready to go and she keeps saying I need to do "her" cab next! LOL I told her I want a few more under my belt to feel confident I won't mess it up! (If I did, I would be able to see the disappointment in her eyes...even though she'd say it looks great...and I do everything I can to avoid "that look"!)

See, and around here "That look" means "Mel brought home more rocks/tools/is on a mission/be afraid" My thinking is that if the first couple cabs are awful, then just throw them in the polisher, round 'em off into nice pendants, and use them for wrapping practice, or use them as worry stones.

Just finished this one. It's Crinoidal Limestone (China) which has marbleized. It's the softest material I've worked so far, so it required a far lighter touch than anything else I've worked. It was supposed to be an oval, but as I've learned from some smart people on here, "A template is just a freeform waiting to happen!" LOL As I was sanding the dome, a small piece of crinoid chipped off the side...so freeform it became. I picked up two slabs of this material and this was a leftover piece out of one of the slabs after I'd cut out the other preforms. So it was my "practice" piece with this material. The preform was cut on the tile saw, the shape and dome formed with the slant cabber, and the sanding and polishing with the dremel. I really love this material, but won't be working any more of it until I get the pads for the polishing discs on the slant cabber. The dome and girdle seemed to be looking really good until I had to take the sides off. Then both the dome and girdle got skewed. Arghhhh. I think it could be fixable, but I'll leave it as-is as a reminder (at least for now). This material makes it look like scratches on the surface, but it's the crinoids which have cracks in them (not saying the polish is perfect though...). Anywho, here's the cab.

I like it. Crinoid marble has always fascinated me because of all the little critters in it. The pink against the black and white is striking, I think.
That's a fine cab to be once you can finish it. The dome doesn't look that wonky to me, and a little sanding with a fine grit with a pad underneath to alleviate flat spots will turn it into awesome.

Thanks Robin. I'm being impatient by not waiting for the pads to get here and trying to compromise in areas I shouldn't be. I'll get this one up to the standards it should be (my choice of words right there).
