My local Home Depot has a rental mk101 they are selling for about the same price as a harbor freight saw new. The new diamondback series looks solid. Any advice on which one as a cheap trim saw?
Would you rather have warranty or brand?

I'd probably take the mk101. You have to figure the majority of the abuse on that rental saw would have likely been directed at the blades, rather than the saw or any of it's components. While not always the case, I feel Home Depot tools themselves are cheaply made - comparatively speaking. So in that case, you get what you pay for. It's definitely worth taking a close look at the mk101 to make sure you don't see any signs of wear on any of the saw part though.

I volunteered at the Rice Museum cutting smaller thunder eggs in half with a saw like that, the overhead blade wanted to grab them and drove me nuts. If I did it again I would also wear 2 layers of hearing protection.

If I did it again I would also wear 2 layers of hearing protection. You know that's a really good point. I use my trim saw to "shape" cab, not just cut slabs (small ones!), and I wouldn't be able to do that with the mk101. I bought an $80 tile saw from Menard's. Although I would prefer something larger than a 7" blade, but now in retrospect with what you said, I wouldn't want the overhead blade...

Interesting! I hadn’t heard that about the overhead blade. If I jimmy rig a vice will it be better?
Honestly I’d buy a used slab saw if anyone had one !
