I'd vote for wood on appearances, but if I recall correctly the banded iron will stain the water red or black when on the grinding wheel. Nice variation in color in the wood makes for wonderful slabs.

mohs - hmmmm Here's a couple pics of the end of my piece... The pic on the right and your original definitely seem to show wood grain-like patterns. Pretty piece. Thanks! I love this piece. I was thinking it had more colors in it, but that's another rock I found at the same time. I think that other rock is a slate...but where I found it, there really isn't that much slate that I know of...there's a ton of slate in the Black Hills, but it doesn't seem to be as prevalent towards the Badlands...or I could be completely mistaken. I'll post some pics of that one as well. I found it in the same vicinity of this piece... Question: thinking some more about it... is tiger iron even found in the US? I’ve only ever heard of it coming from Australia. Well, if that's the case, this could've been solved right off the bat! I'm not affiliated with this auction, but here's a link to the auction that made me think this could be Banded Tiger Iron...auction says it came from Wyoming, so pretty close to here. www.ebay.com/itm/Tiger-Iron-Banded-Ironstone-Tumbled-Natural-Genesis-Stone-Wyoming-236-grams/333793758049Hmmm, isn’t “high 30s” an oxymoron? I'm thinking, being out in temperatures like that...willingly...makes me just a plain old moron sometimes! LOL Hmmm, isn’t “high 30s” an oxymoron? Not if you haven’t settled down yet. Thank you thank you thank you for posting this! Way to see the apple so ripe on the tree and not hesitating to pluck it! This one made me literally laugh out loud! (SD did just legalize you know! LOL) Thanks for posting the link. I'm not sure where the Brown Ranch is located. I picked my piece up down at Railroad Buttes here in SD. Another thank you for this link! I started to read a little, saw how long it is, and bookmarked it for later. (Not enough coffee yet this morning!) I will definitely be reading this one later! I'd vote for wood on appearances, but if I recall correctly the banded iron will stain the water red or black when on the grinding wheel. Nice variation in color in the wood makes for wonderful slabs. There are a ton (not literally) of iron pieces in the landscaping river rock we got this past summer. If the pieces are wet, just handling them leaves red on your hand. The first time it happened, I actually thought I had a cut on my hand at first...it looks like watered down blood when it gets on your fingers. I was telling my wife last night I think I could get two nice slabs out of this piece...now to find someone with a slab saw here locally, because my trim saw won't handle a cut that size!

Actually, I believe stephan is correct. Tiger iron is only found in Western Australia around the Brockman Range.
We have banded iron, but not tiger iron with tiger eye in it. I don't believe it can be tiger iron without tiger eye in the composition.

There is a Cousin of Tiger Iron located in NW WI and MN. Some call it binghamite.

jasoninsd what did SD just legalize — apple plucking or laughing? From what I read on the internet, what became legalized leads to a lot of laughter...and munchies...and sleepiness! LOL

Is the name that we are looking for banded iron formation? A common source of iron in the upper midwest and north. Good catch. Actually, Mohs had said BIF in several of his posts. At the time I had no idea what that was and didn't want to seem like a total idiot, so I didn't ask. But I did Google it! I googled BIF iron on Google, and realized it was Banded Iron Formation, so I did figure out what he was referring to... I'm really thinking all the suggestions of this being petrified wood are correct. We do have Banded Iron Formations around here, but not Banded Tiger Iron. All my confusion with asking if this was Banded Tiger Iron stems from a seller on eBay putting an erroneous identification of Tiger Iron into their auction title when it should have been identified as Banded Iron Formation. I don't have the experience, nor knowledge base to know any different, so I'm so grateful everyone was willing to help solve this little caper!

I picked this up hounding out at Railroad Buttes here in South Dakota. At first I thought it might be petrified wood. I ran across an auction on eBay for Banded Tiger Iron from Wyoming and it looks very similar, but it didn't have the same colors as this piece. It was only tan and black. So, a google search brought up a bunch of photos, and a lot of them had multiple colors, but a lot on there were wavy rather than straight lines. So, any thoughts as to this being Banded Tiger Iron? Old post but what a gorgeous piece of petrified wood! What did you do with it? Ones I find that look just like that tumble into this….ugh, hold on. I have to post it, then hit the edit button for Cloudinary to show up.

Slabbed it and tried to cab it...but like most other petrified woods I've tried to work, it was inundated with fractures and pits. Arghhh!
