How much sugar are you adding to that?

"When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (Reference to the human tendency to relate everything to previous experiences. This includes me.)
This looks a LOT like a banded rhyolite, which is of volcanic origin. Super common in Northern Nevada. I've even found some with that yellow tint.
Doesn't look like wood at all to me.
Am I completely fogged here?

There's somewhere near-abouts 1 lb in there, I'd say.
Earlier in the thread a few pointed out it wasn't wood, so I edited the title.
I see stripes and get excited. Still honing my eye towards identifying pet wood. Sometimes spotting that curvature in the end grain is hard.

I have a hard time identifying some pet wood...unless it looks like a brown "piece of wood" - like it's supposed to look like dangit! LOL

Week 6: polish AO. 1118g. Running total mass loss: 15.5% Mass didn't change from last week, at least within the limits of accuracy and precision of my kitchen scale. For a hard stone, I'd expect something like that, but given this lost 19g in prepolish last week, I was expecting it'd lose a few grams. So the finish on this isn't that great - kind of anticipated that but was hopeful. Sure there's a "shine" on it, but nowhere near a mirror-like gloss. The backup plan is to push it further with the dry corncob and polish. There's a few other stones in there as well that were polished. 6lb barrel. This will run for a week and see how much it has improved and whether it warrants running longer. Here's a side-by-side comparison of a different soft material, the one on the left is rotary wet polish, then the right was rotary dry polished after wet polish. It was only ran for one week, but I wonder if longer would continue to improve it. If anyone wanted to know what bruising looks like, here you go. I don't think I've seen bruising this bad before, so this is a bit of an exaggerated example. This is why I don't run my good material through the finishing steps with a large stone in the barrel. Big rock doesn't seem to care, the radius of the corners aren't as sharp.

Week 7: Dry corncob polish AO. 1116g. Running total mass loss: 15.6% I'm liking the way it's going so far. It's in the corncob for another week to see if it keeps getting better. Just wiped off, not washed. Tis curious though, I don't recall the surface being that pitted for polish to be getting stuck in. Seeing the images on the big screen it seems evident that it's the light brown areas that aren't taking the polish as well as the dark brown/black areas. We'll see if more dry polishing can push it just a wee bit more.

That turned out pretty nice! I do enjoy watching these monsters progress and the weekly updates were great.
What are you planning to do with that big monster?

Thanks all!
First time I've tried something that big in dry polish, so that's encouraging to see that it did so much more than the wet polish for this softer stone.
This will join other big stones on a shelf for display.

Beautiful shine on that stone. No it's not petwood, but there is a name for that stone, can't remember the name, but it starts with an S....

Where can I see a pic of the stones on the display shelf? Meant to reply to this. I've dug through my phone and photos and it turns out I didn't take a picture of the shelf before. Right now they're all packed away in storage. There will be a new display shelf once we get into a new place (WIP). By then there might be another stone or two to add to the shelf. I'll make it a point to get a picture.
