We got my 6 year old son a rock tumbler for Christmas and he’s loving the process so far. We want to head out and find some of our own rocks for tumbling, but really have no clue where to go. We are in Orange County and we’re wondering where some locations are that would be easy for a 6 year old and 4 year old to get too? We aren’t looking for anything amazing, but a place we can spend an hour or so picking up some rocks that will be fun to tumble.

Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! We don't have an orange county...but I'm betting if it's California, there's plenty of members who would have that info.

Sorry, I assumed the “socal” in the title would be clear enough. We are in Southern California.

If I was trying to introduce kids to the fun of rocks, I'd concentrate of finding rounded cobble on beaches or in stream beds. I seem to recall a few rocky beaches in Northern San Diego County. But your coastal canyon can have lots of river deposited rocks that will allow kids to select, sort, and fondle rocks. What more can you ask for if you are 6 or 4?

The beach! I’ve found neat stuff around Carlsbad which is south of you. For really nice stuff to tumble I’d say plan to travel. Santa Barbara beaches have really good stuff and a little farther north is Jalama Beach which is awesome for collecting. Note there may be some restrictions on how much you can pick up and petrified whale bone is a no no and it’s my understanding the rangers will take it from you. Around Acton in LA county are some easy to collect spots right off Hubbard rd. Good luck and have fun.

For kids, Lavic Siding just east of Barstow CA about 40 miles off old Route 66 that parallels Hwy 40. It's in all the California Gem site books and you can drive right to it with any vehicle. Tons and tons of good multicolored tumbling jasper, good moss agate and mixes of the two materials. It's not necessary to go south of the RR tracks. You can go south from RT 66 on Lavic Siding rd and hit the frontage along the north side of tracks, go east a mile or so and you will hit all kinds of material in patches on the desert. Don't even have to do any digging. if you want a place a bit closer, Hector Hills are off the same road about ten miles closer to you. Just go south o the Hector rd till you hit a dirt road heading west parallel to RT 66 go a couple miles and the hills dropping off into the basin to the south are full of agate of various types, most is not super colorful but if you look hard these is a bit of everything including dendritic, plumey stuff, breccia and chapenite. Another great easy site for kids.

Some SB County info lists hounding for whale bone as one of the attractions at Jalama. It’s best to ask when you get there. Different rangers have different opinions. For me, it didn’t matter, since I didn’t find any whale bone. Root beer agate, jasper, rhyolite, “cave onyx” and “Catalina marble” are so plentiful that no one will care. Jalama Beach from above by sdttds, on Flickr Jalama Beach rootbeer agates by sdttds, on Flickr Jalama rootbeer agate close-up 1 by sdttds, on Flickr A little jasper from Jalama by sdttds, on Flickr Jalama sandstone by sdttds, on Flickr My prize find: a large Jalama agate nodule by sdttds, on Flickr From what I’ve heard rangers at Gaviota are more likely to confiscate, but rock clubs have field trips for whale bone to both places.
