If this is your first finished tumble, you did a helluva job! Congrats on that shine. Thanks! I just followed all the tips on the forum and was very patient. Now I don't want to send them off to the judges haha I don't blame you, but just think what your next batch will look like with some material that's not as "difficult"!

In an effort to win the “Biggest Procrastinator” award I sent in an application 5-31-21. We just got the rocks and put them in last night. We have never done the contest before as our barrels are always full and have not had the desire to interrupt anything we were running for rocks that we would be sending off. With what the last year has been and A.J. not doing any shows we are well stocked up on finished product so decided what the heck. I will add to the chorus from this year (and years past): “I cannot believe they chose this material”, “My rocks are all duds”, “This is really going to be challenging”..... Seriously though, seeing as they probably had to sweep the floor to get a box of rocks together at this point we are just glad they could accommodate us. A.J. was a little less enthused when I told him what the deadline was for sending them in and may have muttered “why even bother”. Trying to be positive I told him we needed a challenge. I thought he bought into it until he started grinding away on a couple of pieces to get rid of crumbly edges and finished with nothing. “Really!?!?” was the look he gave me. I think there are a couple decent possibilities, but it will be a challenge to finish five worth submitting. I know there is not a size requirement stated but have to think that would come in to play at some point. If we broke these down to eliminate the various fractures/faults we would be submitting pebbles. Just gotta make due with what you got. We better get hustling. To make it more interesting we are going to be out of town for a couple of weeks in July as well, may have to take a tumbler with us .

Agreed thebeef, the one on the right is my pick as well. The jagged edges of the red stuff embedded in the glossy clear give it a lot of interest. It does not resemble the others very much.

Here's all the BCJ I salvaged, good and bad: I might-could do some of these a bit more justice with a few more tumbles, but I'm kinda done with it at this point

I've really enjoyed it. There's no way I could ever recount my actual process with these...they sorta bounced back and forth through stages, different tumblers, and batches. At one point, I took a couple that I had "completed" and ran them through another month of rough. It paid off on a couple though. It's going to be hard to part with them.

I seen a Facebook post from Feather River Lapidary recently saying they had over 90 entries for the tumbling contest this year. That is triple what it was back around 2015. It has to be pretty challenging to judge 90 sets of stones. Pretty good fundraiser though if they are taking in over $3,000 and paying out $400.

I figured it was bigger than that, but I had no idea the history.

90 contest entries . . . That's about 300 pounds of rock .

90 contest entries . . . That's about 300 pounds of rock . The rocks are donated every year. That is why the material is never anything exotic and is usually local stuff found on club outings. The only actual out of cost for the contest is shipping and the $400 in prize money. Chuck
