Can anyone tell me what the difference is between Mexican Flower Jasper and Mexican Crazy Lace? I’m pretty much addicted to the crazy lace and am wondering how the Mexican Flower Jasper is different? Is the pattern different/better or the same pattern but stones consist of jasper instead of agate? Thanks for your input. I’ve just never heard of the Mexican Flower Jasper before and am considering ordering some.🤗🤗🤗

OK, here's where common trade names used in marketing become kind of confusing. To me, the Mexican Flower Jasper being offered by folks like the Rockshed looks like #2 grade crazy lace agate. I may be wrong but it sees like every few years someone goes through the discard pile at the crazy lace mines and comes up with a new trade name for the reject material that is not as fancy as old stock crazy lace. However a few types of Mexican flower jasper are actually flowering or orbicular rhyolite and may or may not polish as well as agate.

Omggg, that was close, I had 5 lb of it in my cart and was about to checkout 😂 Not going to lie, I was really excited about finding a maybe even better version of my favorite rock, but can’t imagine how disappointed I’d have been once it arrived.😂 Thanks so much for sparing me from the heartbreak!🤗🤗🤗

Okay, so I find this interesting and might very well agree with Mel ( Sabre52) on this one. You had me curious about the material, so a quick Google search brought up only ONE distributor of material with THAT name, The Rock Shed. When I looked at the material, I notice it has a very similar look to Flor de Durazno (Flower of Peach) Lace Agate being sold by JH Kalmore. A Google search for Flower of Peach Lace Agate brings up only ONE distributor of material with THAT name - JH Kalmore. I'd take a look at both materials and compare them for yourself, but I'm inclined to think they're the same material...again with a slight name change for marketing purposes. I could be wrong...but both of those materials look eerily similar to me...

Well, I’m so glad I posted the question about it. I feel like I dodged a bullet for sure!😂😂😂. The Mexican Crazy Lace is a little challenging for me but I can’t seem to get enough of it!😂 Thanks for researching!

I got around 20 pounds of it and it was amazing. Very intricate banding and very reminiscent of Crazy Lace. So I ordered another 20 pounds. There was NO intricate banding in that second batch...none whatsoever. It all had wide and "blurred" lines in the fortifications. So, I called JH Kalmore and told them about the difference. I sent pics to him and then talked to him again. He assured me they were both Flower of Peach...just different pieces. I'm not 100% convinced on that one though... I did order some Laguna Lace from him though and that DID have more intricate banding in it like I was hoping for! So, Laguna Lace is another option for you to appease your addiction! LOL

The flower agate that I know is a Chalcedony from Madagascar. Long way from Méjico.

Well, you have definitely done your homework. 😂 I’ll check out the Laguna Lace for sure. I’ve only ordered rough from RS and Kingsley. I would like to find other reputable sites. Can I ask where you’ve been buying your rough?

Can I ask where you’ve been buying your rough? I've bought from The Rock Shed because they're local for me. It's only a short trip up to Keystone from where I'm at. I concur with others opinions that Shawn is great to deal with over there. He's very helpful and very customer oriented. I've also bought Crazy Lace, Flower of Peach, and Laguna Lace from www.jhkalmore.com/. I've spoken with Joseph a couple times. I take it that he might be the "J" in JH Kalmore. Very pleasant to deal with...

You are so lucky to be near RS! I would love to have a local rock shop. I’d make a pest of myself- hanging around, asking questions, and of course handling rocks!😂 Thanks so much for the link. I’m headed there now.🤣

LOL There must be a lot of variation coming from JH Kalmore. I had ordered some stuff a while back and set it aside. I just pulled it out to take a look and of the 7 or 8 large chunks of two different materials, only 2 of the chunks look like they actually had decent patterns--one piece of Laguna lace is beautiful! The others look like they will be tumbler filler once I break them up.

When I cut several of my pieces of Laguna Lace, there was large portions of the rock which was devoid of any fortifications. Below is a pic of a slab that only has fortifications in the upper section of the slab. At first I was disappointed...but after seeing some of the host rock wet, I think it might make some amazing cabs even without the fortifications present. You can see where I plan to take cabs from this piece. I have several pieces where I'm actually trying to incorporate a lot of the host rock with only slight amounts of fortifications. I think they'll make some beautiful cabs...and tumble material may be the same result...

That lower right cab may change shape before you are done. I’ve not had much luck with druzy veins running all the way across.

Now I'm frustrated with myself big time. I had really taken my time on these slabs with marking out the shapes between fractures and possible problem areas. Except when I just took another look at this slab, I see all kinds of problem areas where I marked out the shapes. Arghhhh! This is the opposite side. This would work with no fracture lines and might make an interesting cab with the druzy pocket...

I often sketch out ideas, then see problems and change my mind. I’m more inclined to initially use pencil than Sharpie now, until I’m more sure. That way I don’t have conflicting, confusing lines drawn when I’m working. You might consider going a little larger, though.

Good idea on the pencil to start with...this is what my last slabs looked like before I cut the preforms:
