I have been trying to find info on Tabu Tabu Jasper(TTJ). I have a piece in the shop I purchased years ago and I have been trying to find out about it. I have found that some shops online use Painted Valley Jasper(PVJ) as a synonym for TTJ. Yet images and descriptions indicate the that TTJ is a brecciated jasper cemented by agate/quartz and that PVJ is a brecciated jasper cemented by hematite. I know that India Green Moss Agate, Tree Agate and a couple of others are from the same deposit just slightly different sub environment (left side of deposit vs right side of deposit) so this is possible with these two as well. I was hoping someone on the site might have some more info on either/both. Also I have now found a couple of additional synonyms which appear to be Forest Fire Jasper and Smoke & Embers Jasper. These last two synonyms are from South Africa Where as the TTJ is suppose to be from Namibia. I know that these two countries share a common border and it may be a difference due to the deposit/formation not understanding where the property line is or it might just be that people are playing games with the naming to make money (like mexican onyx instead of travertine). So really I am confused and was hoping somebody could set me straight. TIA

Sounds like you already know more about it that I do. You probably hit the nail on the head with “...people playing games with the naming....”

The onyx vs travertine misnaming is one of my pet peeves in that arena. Jade simulants are another. And then, of course, there is Ty-D-Bol turquoise.

Since I just mentioned it in another context, I'm apologetic in directing you to the Nebraska Dept of Nat. Res. geology web page which has an agate lexicon with over 3000 names documented with some locality, bibliographic, and descriptive details. I found your primary name there described as a breciated jasper agate with red, white, and blacks with a citation for its presumed first mention in the Lapidary Journal. I doubt that it is complete, but together with the geographically sortable photo collection and other resources its useful in chasing names and synonyms. snr.unl.edu/data/geologysoils/agates/agateslexicon.aspx

Yep, what Roy said. A trade name for a different variation from the same area. I agree with Roy too in that the old original more brecciated and dramatic patterned material was much nicer then what you see now.
