Got some hot transparency going for my smaller tumbler. Here's a video of water vs. slightly thicc water: you can clearly hear a difference, and if you stare at the right places see that the falling action starts just a bit later with the thickener (transition is around the 1min mark, abruptly). Barrel is ~80% full of large media (with a sacrificial labradorite) and has ~130ml water, with ~1.3g guar gum for the 2nd half.
Also made a slo-mo side by side of the action:

Excellent videos, rrod! The slow motion side-by-side video is great to show the difference with the thickener. Your clear lid is a great idea for testing out the effect of different thickeners. Have you experimented with any others yet? The guar gum looks like it works well. I actually have some lying around after using it to make giant bubble solution for the kids and it does work great as a thickener.

Awesome videos! There's something very mesmerizing just watching the tumbles! And what a great experiment! I was watching barrel to the right in the slow-mo video and was staring at it very intently. I then glanced at the top video (which was paused in its start position) and there was an optical illusion of the barrel in the top video going backwards - even though it was stopped! I tried it several times and it worked for me every time. (Just thought I'd share that! LOL)

So your saying my tumbler needs more fiber? Maybe instead of borax I'll add a tbsp of Metamucil to it

Now if I could just figure out a way to get the same thing going with the B model ^_^ Planning on making another vid with some actual rocks to show relative effect of large vs small media on action. I would also like to show how the thicker slurry can help with larger grit sizes, but I'm not sure how well the plexiglass would hold up against SiC…

I'll have to sacrifice a lid (I bought 4) to see how well they stand up to grit. If the inside is still visible after some grinding, then I can try thickeners that require breaking up.

It seems like your barrels are more than 75% full, at least when tipped on their side.
Ideally when tumbling, you need a bit more space at the top to get more cascade effect.
I like your experiment however!

I like your experiment however! Yeah it's a bit overfull but I just went with it. I'll have a run here with ackchyual rocks to test out the effect of small media and keep it a bit more open.
