Here's a nice raptor that we have along the South Carolina coast. We see them during the summer when we are camping there. It's been hard to get a photo of them as they are always on the move and flying treetop level or lower. Most of the time I've seen them during the middle of the day and they were heading South. There was a hotline to call when there was a sighting but a couple years ago they made it a little harder to report sightings. Have to do it online only now. My guess is that the state is not getting many sighting reports anymore. NOT my photo. Swallow-Tail Kite

This one flew over today in a group of 3. Wonder if they're watching this one... beefjello I hear you about the coyotes, heard them for the first time coming in after dark last week, and the males are said to be pretty agressive this time of year.

Brian, Rosie was a dark phase female Red-tail. Really a big gal. The best hawks to train for educational work are the most tough and fearless ones. Red Tails are fantastic, especially females. Oddly, as they are quite similar species, Red Shouldered Hawks tend to be nervous, fearful, and go virtually catatonic on the gauntlet. Rosie's favorite thing was being around people , even noisy crowds.
Our Cara Caras here love the pork. Dead wild hog does not escape their notice for long.

Hey Rockoonz, that looks like a turkey vulture to me. They always wait for something to be dead first. The black vultures, now... different story. Spring must be on it's way! i saw the First Vulture of Spring yesterday. The wind chill was below 0, poor thing! I am right up on the 45th parallel. We get some unusual birds sometimes -- a couple years ago, a white pelican, this year and last, a Cara Cara, and just once, a Kite, don't remember which kind. Saw it for about 30 seconds and it was gone, never to return.

Nice Beef! We had a Redtail hanging out this winter. We had a real squirrel problem and he helped me clean it up pretty quick. He (or she not really sure) got used to me snowshoeing and would just hang out in the trees and ignore me and the puppy. He spooked one day and swooped pretty low (less than 15 feet above us) and sent my little mini doxie into a downright panic (He has always hated birds). Spring is almost here and He has gone off to better hunting grounds as between the 2 of us we have eliminated the 15 plus squirrels that were causing havoc in the yard. Also had a Great Horned Owl hanging around this winter. What an intimidating bird they are. I would only see him at dusk and he scared the crud out of me every time he would swoop overhead (they truly are silent on the wing!)

Red Shouldered Hawks are interesting hawks, the most opportunistic feeders I've ever seen. This guy hunts frogs in our water troughs, small lizards ad snakes in the garden, grasshoppers and crickets, deer mice and hispid cotton rats, sick birds around the feeders and even white winged doves that had their feet or feathers frozen to perches during our ice storm. He really scored during the ices storm! Man, those guys don't miss a thing.

Pretty sure it's not one of ours, but ya never know! Momma hawk started sitting on her nest last week so we'll have kids again this year hopefully! This will be the 4th year they've nested in our Cypress tree. The past 3 years produced 3 baby hawks each year. I hope we have another 3 this year. They are so much fun to watch.
