I received one of these 80 grit wheels as a gift and just received a 220 of the same kind. The 220 has some discoloring and wanted to see what you all think. I emailed the company so we'll see what they say... 80 grit is on the right, 220 on the left. Both new and the same kind. Is this colorization going to cause problems later? Just seemed odd...

Looks to me like it's a defective plating operation. I'm guessing the darker spots are the nickle with no diamond on them.

The 220 is a teenager and is going through some changes and what you are seeing there is acne.
Seriously I have to agree that the diamond did not attach to those spots. The manufacturer should replace it if it is new.

Perhaps the wheel was dirty/greasy and the application wasn't consistent/didn't stick. The diamonds look like they are there. I'd be tempted to try it, to see if it cleans up after one rock. I'd also ask for a new one, but hopefully not waste postage sending the "damaged" one back.

I'm having a bit of trouble seeing if there is diamond plated in the dark spots. Might it be possible to see a bit more detail of the surface?

Vince looked at it too. If you have a laptop, try that.

Hmm well the company wrote back. Not sure I agree with the reasoning but they basically said give it a try and let them know if I have issues.
Someone else mentioned it might be oil from so give it a quick wash which I'll try out.
I'll see if I can also get a magnified view and post it. I took a quick look under 10x with my loupe but was kind of hard to notice anything strange.

Alright, here are some (attempted) pictures under 10x through my loupe. Nothing looked noticably different from the discolored areas vs the normal area that I could tell but you guys might have some more experience with this. I did try washing one of the sections with some dawn soap and water. The spots are still there but the bluish color faded. Just spots now. I think the company (KN) will stand behind their word so I'll probably give it a try but an going to write them again to set my expectations.

It looks like the diamond is pretty even across the discolored areas. I'd give them a spin to see how they feel, particularly with the backing of KN. They have always done right by me.

Yep, give them a whirl and see how they do. KN is a good company and if anything goes wrong, I'm sure they'll replace the wheel.

I have a 60 sintered that was discolored. Works perfectly fine. After a few uses the discoloration went away.
