I've had this chunk of obsidian since I was a little girl and last month I decided on a whim to tumble it. Sorry the photo's a bit blurry, I didn't realize it until it was too late. Because of it's size I decided to tumble it alone with just filler media, grit, and some Borax - and obviously water - the three latter I added after I took this photo. This was after it's first go-round. And after stage two.... It actually spent 8 days instead of 7 for stage 3 because my parents and I went briefly out of town. And here's the final product! It turned out so shiny and pretty. If anyone wants to see the photos at full size or some of my prior attempts I actually decided to make a Flickr album to store them in as I'm trying to learn what I'm doing. I'm super happy with how this turned out. I might go back and try re-polishing some of my failed attempts. The first few batches I used A. O. that I had got off Amazon and they just did not turn out. I know some of it is because I got too ambitious and tumbled rocks of different hardness together. (I didn't know any better.) This one I used something called CPP that I ordered from Johnson Brothers Lapidary. I'm just so proud of how it turned out that I had to share.

Very nice! Looks like it took a good shine to it. Good idea tumbling it alone, I've had trouble getting obsidian through the process without chipping.

Nice. Obsidian is notorious for its chipping and being tough to tumble. I have several pieces and I’m still too chicken to run them yet🐓🐓🐓

Congrats on a happy tumble. A difficult rock and wonderful result.

Nice tumble. Never thought of doing a rock alone! Brilliant idea for a hard to tumble stone.

Nice tumble. Never thought of doing a rock alone! Brilliant idea for a hard to tumble stone. Thank you. I thought it best to do it by itself because of it's size. I already had an experience with a past tumble where I put one too many stones in and had to remove the largest the next day. So I figured a big piece like this was better off by itself with plenty of ceramic filler.
