Does anyone know a good resource for marriages between USA Soldiers and French Women during WWI?
My Grandpa was stationed in France, Western Front, during WWI. He was married to a French woman. I do not know her name. I have their wedding photo, labeled with his name and French wife.
Photo of him with his comrades that shows his wedding ring.
His complete Military records, including places he was stationed. Some original letters he sent home. None of the letters are about him getting married.
His wife did not come back to the States with him.
He later married my Grandma, in Wisconsin.
My research indicates that all marriages between WWI USA Soldiers and French Women required a license and documentation.
I know this will be hard to research further. My Daughter, Grandson and I are his only living descendants. I am an only child. My Uncle had no children.
Any help would be appreciated.

My Dad was stationed in Australia during WWII. He was married while there. When the war ended, they were divorced. I was able to find the names of my 2 half sisters from Australia. This was only due to both of them receiving GI Bill funding to attend college. All I have is their names, when they attended college. Have been unable to find any further info about them.

I wonder if you could find something through the churches.

OMG so frustrating for you. So much history is being lost. If you have names and college attended the obvious course of action is to search the college registration records and graduation roles. I'm guessing you want to reach out to them, so searching through the college records would hopefully turn up some leads to follow. As for your Grandfather, well a lot of towns have digitized the old records (marriage, birth, death). Some of the info can be had for free or a nominal charge. You will need to figure out where he was stationed and then locate the suspect town, villages, or city that the wedding would have taken place in, then attempt to search any online records. Unfortunately this is not going to be page one on Google. We did a similar search for some long lost relatives, and be damned if we didn't stumble upon some marriage records from WW2 that clued us in to who and where these people were. Unfortunately it was in occupied Poland and the trail pretty much ended there, but we did get names and death certificates. We were well into 50 or 60 pages of Google search before this turned up. It took weeks (oh heck it was over a month of searching part time), but a connection was made, and we did actually find a relation that we did not know about. Good luck and I hope you find something!

Just a thought: You could get DNA tested via 23andMe, create a profile on their DNA Relatives Service and open the visibility of your profile so genetic relatives can contact you (and vice versa). This would only work if someone related to you has been DNA tested as well. If you are planning some sort of nefarious activity, or are concerned that somehow your DNA will be sci-fi data mined for medical info or to make a clone...this option is probably not for you...

Beth, I have had numerous questions over the years and have had tremendous success posting a variety of questions on the Rootsweb message boards. I think you should try your questions there. Put them in as many categories as is appropriate and make your title very succinct. I can't even tell you how lucky I have been there.

Thanks for the suggestions.
My goals are to: Find the name of the French woman my Grandpa was married to. If there are any records of their marriage. Then continue from there.
My half sisters from Australia are about 20-25 years older than me, based on when they went to college. I do not know their names or where they lived.
I have used the Rootsweb Message boards in the past for other ancestors. They were very helpful. Never tried using them for people who I did not have any info about, such as name, ancestors, descendants, etc.
Received an IOU for a 23 and Me test for my Birthday this year. That could be interesting.
I am not giving up on this, just rethinking my research methods.

Good luck! It would be cool to find your sisters.

Yes, it would be cool to find my sisters. Or their decedents.
