Why are you boraxing between grits? Why not just tumble in water to ensure that the batch is clean between grits and then burnish using the borax at the end? To me there seems no benefit to using it between stages. I always use borax before polish stage to ensure all grit is removed. Borax just cleans (not actually burnish in true sense of word) which is why soap works as well. I've always had good luck just using water.

I have some "Sea Jasper" from the rock shed. I have had the same issues in Stage 1 and 2. 46/70 and 220 in a rotatory with no Borax. I have been using them now as small rock filler in other tumbles. They have not improved, just a lot smaller, in several months of tumbling.
