Today, May 18, 2021 is the 41 st anniversary of the volcanic explosion at Mount St. Helens in Washington, USA My family and I were outside working in the garden when we heard rumbling and explosions from 150 miles to the southwest. I said, "There goes Mount St. Helens." That must have been a horrible experience for the victims. We only got a light dusting of ash down on the Oregon Coast. www.usgs.gov/observatories/cascades-volcano-observatory

I remember that the eruption was in May 1980, but how in the hell was that 41 years ago?!? Getting old I guess. We've visited the National Monument there and went through some of the lava tubes while on a trip through the PNW, fascinating stuff.

We were about 30 miles away in Beaverton, Oregon watching spellbound by the the ash and lightning, concerned about all the people in the path of the ash as it drifted to the north and east.

It was before my time, but I grew up with a view of that mountain from the house. I was a teenager helping my dad and his buddy roof a house. We were peeling off an old cedar shingled roof and finding ash from the eruption embedded in it.

I'm still wondering about the Geo-chemistry of Hot Silicic Ash filling Spirit Lake with Trees and mud ???

The ash cloud traveled all the way across the country to the east coast. I remember seeing it in the skies of NC a day or two later. Four months after the blast my job took me to Spokane, Washington for a couple of days. The countryside and vegetation around Spokane was still covered in ash. It looked like a thin layer of concrete had been sprayed on everything.

We collected ash. Everything was gray, and the ash fairly deep. Odd. Collected several jars of it. Very fine grain. I think it was in August.

We were living in northern ND than and it effected us for over a week! No sun, the dust(ash) and etc... Have been to the mountain several times and will be returning to it.. Material is starting to show up in areas within a 50 mile radius of the explosion.. Never know what will come up...

I'm still wondering about the Geo-chemistry of Hot Silicic Ash filling Spirit Lake with Trees and mud I think it's an excellent opportunity to study the rate of silicification of the trees that were buried, in the lake and on the hills. We could learn a lot about petrified wood from this event.

That takes me back. I also noticed the very "tiny" cameras they were using. We are so spoiled.
