Glad you are safe and (relatively) sound Jason. Sounds like it wasn't a total bust and surely a valuable learning experience for next time.

Sounds like my kind of party Jason. Glad you made it out in one piece. That weather down there in S.D. can sure pop up on ya. I can be honest and just say I know everyone's weather can be sporadic...however, I would say the weather that day out here was "spazmotic"! LOL I forgot to mention in the update post that when the thunderstorms were finally gone that night, fireflies were out and about. I hadn't seen them in years.

Glad you made it back safe and even got an agate to show for it. Sounds and looks like you had a big adventure although not as big as you would have wanted. If you only came out with a couple of wounds I'd say it was a good trip.

You're right...that Teepee will remain "as is". It's a memento from the trip. I couldn't believe that damn umbrella handle nearly knocked me out! I've been punched in the nose (way more times than I should have been) and I would say this was even harder than any of those! LOL - My sister-in-law said to just tell people I didn't want to be "rescued" and she punched me in the face to get me in the vehicle! LOL As that marauding raccoon was staring back at me that morning, all I could think of was that scene from Elf that I've posted the gif of numerous times! I thought I was going to be living that one out! LOL I swear I'm cursed at the moment when it comes to finding Fairburns...maybe I need to burn some sage! I hate it when ridiculous things hurt more than they should, and you're just thinking, "well, THAT wasn't worth the pain." I have to say, I've never been punched in the nose. Other places, yes, but not the nose. Must be respect for my pretty face. Good thing that racoon wasn't having a hankerin' for, shall we just say, meat? And, if you'd been in a Will Farrell movie, that umbrella wouldn't have hit you in the nose, iff you know what I mean. The sage may be worth a try, unless you're just bumping up against a cosmic limit of how many cool agates a person can find in one year.... especially fortifications. You can test that theory by sending the Fairburns you've found to others (you might find some willing takers on this board, if you ask nicely). In any case, I think you may have earned a special rock-hounding merit badge when you come back with better stories than rock. Glad you're back, mostly in one piece, my friend. Maybe it's time to resume safer activities, like undermining an overhang. It looks like umbrellas are hazardous, and may need a "Caution: may punch you in the face when least expected" warning label. When I was assaulted, I immediately thought "Did that really just happen?!?" - The worst part about it, was the rancher and his two kids were standing there talking to us while we were loading up the vehicle...and I just couldn't utter the words that were racing through my spinning brain at that instant! You know, the ones that always make you feel better psychologically, not necessarily physically! LOL My wife thought I should take some cans of Vienna Sausage with me on the trip...so maybe the raccoon really was after my Vienna Sausage...as you implied! LOL I was just floored that I after all the Teepee Canyon Agates I've been finding and mining IN Teepee Canyon, that I would have to travel so far away from that location to find ANOTHER one, rather than a Fairburn! LOL - Don't get me wrong, I'm VERY grateful for all the Teepees I've found this summer - so far...but c'mon...I need to get on a Fairburn kick now! LOL I loved the rock-hounding-merit-badge comment...I laughed out loud on that one!

I'm so definitely glad I did it...and the most valuable lesson I learned was NOT to take an umbrella! LOL (I never even used the dang thing anyway! LOL)

Not in California... unless you live in the mountains, what you see is pretty much what you get. Took me a long time to figure out why visitors from elsewhere wouldn't leave the house without first consulting the Weather Channel (yes, this was pre-cell phones). In California (most of the West Coast, really), the Weather Channel is looking out the window, and remembering what yesterday was like. Things usually change pretty gradually here. Who knows, though, how global weirding will change that. 110 in Portland? Wow! Looks like that heat wave mainly missed us. 100 sounds quite reasonable in comparison.

Sounds like an exciting little practice adventure! At least now you will be prepared for the next one. And no to watch out for those sneaky umbrellas!

You're right, I'm kind of looking at this one as a "practice" one! LOL - And that dang umbrella is grounded and can't leave the house again until it's 18! (To be honest, it might actually be older than that! LOL)

Thanks Robin! I actually LOVED that movie! LOL - I used to quote lines from that movie constantly...especially the "I'm trying to use the phone!" line! LOL

I'm glad you didn't run into any serious trouble! Your sister in law was your angel- sounds like. Yeah, I would chalk this up to a practice run. Maybe when the water is a little higher, you can try again. And, bring racoon repellent. LOL! (and no man eating umbrellas)

I know a fellow who floated a gold dredge down a river for a two week trip. He got into some gold after the first bend, but wanted to see what was further downstream. I asked him how it went and he said the best spot was the first one he tried and it got exponentially worse for the next two weeks. Lesson - if you find a good spot, start collecting rather than GPS so you can find it again. Good luck on your trip. I am sure many of us would like to be floating beside you (or one day ahead - LOL). I look forward to your pictures. That was EXACTLY how it felt as I slowly made my way down the river..."I think that last spot was better than this one!" For my "lack of finds", I'm wondering if someone wasn't floating a day or two ahead of me! LOL In fact, I talked to the rancher (whose property ended up being my exit point) and he had said he found a burn pit on his property along the river that was only a week or two old. I told him I'd seen a couple of them along the stretch of river I came through that were about the same age. So, someone had been kayaking the stretch...and having campfires along the way...a big "no-no" in my book...and the rancher's. I would have loved to have some of you guys/gals along with me on that trip! You know what they say...misery loves company! LOL

My sister-in-law said she couldn't sleep the entire night before, knowing I was "suffering" through the thunderstorms. I'm so very blessed to have in-laws that are completely opposite of the stereotypical "in-laws"...they really do love me and are ALWAYS concerned when I'm out hounding.

Well, dang! I was hoping you'd come back with pictures of canteloupe-sized Fairburns... Seriously, glad you made it back safe- and that's one good-looking Teepee. And I did enjoy the story. You'll get 'em next time!

You'll get 'em next time! I know right!?! LOL - I'm not gonna lie...I thought I'd be able to run across SEVERAL that were about that size! Yeah, it really is a pretty good looking Teepee. The pattern goes straight through and no fractures. I keep tellin' myself that..."next time"!! LOL You’d have to drag me outta there kicking and screaming before I went home without a fairburn! If I ran out of food before that happened I know where at least one raccoon hangs around. So here's the story. I was under the impression that WAS a Fairburn. I was so proud of it! After I came home, I shot a picture over to stewdogg to show him the find from the adventure and he's the one that said it looked like a Teepee. After I got to inspecting it...and was honest about the assessment of the fortification colors and the matrix color and material, I had to acquiesce and admit to myself it was a Teepee Canyon Agate rather than a Fairburn Agate. Had I realized it was a Teepee Canyon Agate when the "rescue crew" showed up, I very well might not have gone with them! LOL

Had I realized it was a Teepee Canyon Agate when the "rescue crew" showed up, I very well might not have gone with them! LOL Lol, Jason never said it was a Fairburn when he sent the pic... I looked at the picture of a beautiful rock and said to myself, looks like the host rock for a Teepee agate and then thought the pattern looked Teepee enough to my very unknowledgeable eyes. I was really patting myself on the back on how far I've come when I boldly said to him that it was an awesome looking river rounded Teepee agate! The response was bummed and disappointingly agreeing with my accidental ID of his treasure. I will extend the offer that if you ever get sick of it and never want to look at it again, you can always send it my way. I'm glad to hear you didn't get washed away, squished by a widow maker or beat up by a raccoon on your adventure! Although, I can't stop thinking that your sister-in-law set up a spring loaded boxing glove to pay you back for the sleepless night.
