Did you know this time of year is when many dogs and other 4-legged family members go missing? Or when they are scared to death?
Did you know that Independence Day celebrations with fireworks cause flashbacks for many Veterans?
Over the years I have seen many bring dogs to picnics in the park before fireworks that night. Have also helped catch many dogs who ran off due to being scared from the sounds of fireworks.
I have sat by Veterans who were “forced” to attend fireworks by their family.
One year, my now deceased fiancé’ and I helped organize a Veterans/Dogs Support Group for Independence Day.
The local Veteran’s Organizations co-sponsored a chicken feed at the VFW. All the local Veteran’s organizations had a float in the huge parade in this small tourist town.
The winter population of the town was less than 1500 people. In Summer, it grew to over 4000 seasonal residents. At certain times there were over 10,000 people in this area.
My fiancé’ and I were active members of a couple of the Veteran’s groups. We had heard stories from members and relatives of members who felt obliged to attend the fireworks, even though it took them several days to recover.
Some of the Veterans who reached out to us had therapy dogs with them. The dogs became very scared from the fireworks.
My fiancé’ and I went into action.
One of my professional specialties was PTSD. I had worked with many Veterans in the past. Was also a former BOD member and volunteer at a no kill animal shelter. Had helped many dogs overcome their fear of people/noises. Had helped train several therapy dogs.
I enlisted the help of some Auxiliary members to sew some custom, weighted vests for dogs. Weighted blankets help calm a dog. The vests were made to go under the therapy dog vests.
My fiancé’ recruited other Veterans to come and sit with Veterans with active PTSD related to loud noises.
The event was a huge success. After that, we were often contacted to help provide support for Veterans and therapy dogs so they could attend fireworks related celebrations.
Please do not bring dogs to fireworks. Even the calmest dog can suddenly bolt when startled. Sometimes when in the owners yard. Please do not pressure any relatives who might have PTSD to fireworks.
My fiancé only had PTSD for his Korean War experience when he was suddenly woke up. He was able to attend events with fireworks, but said it took many years. He was also a well known dog whisperer in the area.
Thank you.

My daughter has a lean 120lb Great Pyrenees mix guard dog who turns into a cowering noodle in a good thunderstorm.

My dog Tess was gun shy as a pup, so I took her to a local skeet club. She hid under people's chairs outside the clubhouse when the shooting started out in the field, but the people in the chairs were eating hamburgers and she loved food. And nothing bad happened. She got over it quickly.

If you ever lose your dog in a remote place, one trick is to lay your jacket on the ground before you leave. It smells like you and will give the pup comfort if she/he backtracks on their own scent and will be waiting for you to return. I have only had to do this once and it worked like a charm. I went looking for my dog for a few hours and was so happy to find her curled up sleeping on my coat where she last saw me. She was pretty happy to see me too.

amygdule you're in Sisters? Even out here in rural "leave me alone and let me do WTF I want to do" Arizona there seems to be a surprising but refreshing abundance of caution this year. Of course since we got like .05" of rainfall last night, there will undoubtedly be a fine display tonight, and a psychotic chihuahua. Time for the natural doggie downers.

mohs the veterinarian we saw monday had some interesting info on hot and cool foods for dogs so I looked it up. Hot foods warm the body and can inflame, especially in hot weather. Cool does the reverse. Neutral is fine all the time. The link puts beef in the hot foods, the vet says neutral. I'm going with the vet, for obvious reasons. There was no mention of fried baloney... www.pingminghealth.com/article/581/warming-and-cooling-characteristics-of-common-foods/

6:20 pm in SoCal, and so far, it's been a peaceful, quiet day.
Was after 6 pm before I heard the first fireworks pop.
Of course, there is still 2 1/2 hours of daylight left!

I'll just watch to morrow on you tube
