Speaking of secret niches... Reminds me of a New Year's Eve a few years back. We were prospecting at one of our club's claims on the east side of the Cargo Muchachos. We watched fireworks set off in Yuma, about ten miles to the south of us.
Close enough to see, too far away to hear!

Thankfully, my dog has gotten somewhat used to my next door neighbor's firing range. Sometimes when they are using it, my house shakes. Their range is located about 1/2 mile from my house. My Sierra was used to gun shots before we moved here. Not high power rifles/hand guns, just 22's.
Last night, neighbors combined large fireworks with using the firing range. My dog was barking and whining. I had to go outside to reassure her. I stayed with her for about 30 minutes until she calmed down. My horse was just looking at the fireworks in the sky.

Maybe some war horse in its bloodline? Glad your dog calmed down. They generally figure out that nothing bad happened and get used to loud bangs fairly quickly. Others never get over it and also hide during thunder storms.
