That’s a great article. I’ve read up on this issue in the past and it amazes me how strict the US laws are for using the label. It’s a very tough standard to meet and unfortunately the requirements are not all that clear. In fact, they appear contradictory in many ways. For example, in talking about lab-grown diamonds grown in the US, they state:
However, it is not clear that they would classify gemstones grown in China and cut in the US as “Made in the USA” because the material originated elsewhere, just as they rejected the claim that gold recycled or refined in the US was not transformative enough.
The Swiss rules are more clear in that they define Swiss Made in terms of how much of the final value of the object is created in Switzerland.
