My family is taking a trip to ABQ at the end of August with an overnight trip up to Monument Valley. Does anyone now of any places to hound near ABQ? Mainly looking for places within an hour drive of ABQ. I've read that there are some places up in the Jemez Mountain. We've been out to the Jemez Pueblo a few times but I don't know the area very well. Any other must see places in the area?

Apache tears = obsidian nodules are pretty abundant on the roadsides near Jemez Falls. The Jemez are largely volcanic so not good lapidary territory. Lots of petrified wood in the areas west of ABQ. Most of the sites are well documented in rock hound guides.

I've got Gem Trails of New Mexico on the way. Any other books you'd recommend for New Mexico?

I don't have the book with me but we used the gem trails book on our last trip and there's a few sites that are absolutely fantastic. Lots of great agate that might even be the title in the book "ABQ agate." 2 of the spots on our adventures for the chalcedony roses and fossils were heavily picked. If you have instagram I have our trip saved in the highlights. (name is notlostjustlooking4rocks) Have a great time! I'll be out there in a few weeks to do some more hounding.
