Does the rockshed charge for shipping? I might order some grit from them and was wondering if they charged shipping. Thanks!

I just got my first order from there. 10 lb of grit and the shipping was 13.75 - a flat rate USPS box. I think I was just over the lower size box, because the box would probably have held another 5 lb if I recall correctly. Price checking against other sites showed it was cheaper with shipping than some of the places with free shipping. And it was very fast.

Greetings The Rock Shed does add shipping, but the cost is dependant where you live, within continental USA it will be USPS rates, for me just getting 5lb 60/90 Silicon Carbide grit is ($14.00) however the shipping alone to the United Kingdom is $81.95, giving a total cost $95.95 from The Rock Shed then I have Importation costs $32.68 giving a total cost $128.63 for $14 of grit!
The bottom line for users outside continental USA you will pay through the nose and may not even get your order as it may be over weight limits, some countries only have a 2kg weight limit!

A base shipping rate is quoted for each order. If the items fit in a FRB, that is used. Shipping usually costs a lot less than the initial estimate.

I don't like my credit card being overcharged, and have to get a refund. All it takes is one time. So be sure you get the bottom line before placing an order with anyone. No surprises. ETA - Let me clarify. The problem I had was with a grit order from Kingsley North. Everything was taken care (Sorry, I'm a little slow on the uptake this morning.) I have NEVER had a problem with The Rock Shed. You guys rock!!!

All vendors charge for shipping, either outright or built into the price of the goods. There's no free lunch or anything for that matter. The Rock Shed dose try to find the most economical way to ship, like USPS flat rate and their customer service is top notch.

The Rock Shed dose try to find the most economical way to ship, like USPS flat rate and their customer service is top notch. I was kind of tongue-in-check with my post for that reason. I figured they really meant if the Rock Shed charged *separately* for shipping rather than--as was asked-- charged for shipping. I feel sorry for vendors, of any product, clothing or whatever, that feel pressured to offer "free" shipping. The Wall Street Journal has had quite a few articles, especially in last decade, that many firms have acquiesced to that demand, and failed to price their products accordingly, and nearly gone out of business and some did go out of business. 20 year ago I would guess we would often see free shipping offered on orders of $250 or more. Then they cranked down to $100, then $75. It amazes me to see it now go all the down to $50 or even $35. And there is also the pressure on shipping speed, so many people not wanting to endure the agony of delayed gratification. I think there is actually some measure of character that might be built by delayed gratification. I have a lot of sympathy for vendors suffering from these pressures.

I have giggled uncontrollably on many occasion over this. The guy says "how dare they gouge me $15 shipping on my $25 item, I get it from the other guy for $50 with FREE SHIPPING Oh, the humanity...

What Fernwood said. Every order I’ve gotten from there has been cheaper on shipping than the initial quote.

Assuming it ends up being a flat rate shipping box, I always ask Shaun to top off any empty space in the box with more rocks. Shipping price is the same so it's kind of like getting free shipping on part of your order.
I just include in the comment section: "If there is any room in the shipping box, please fill it with (insert name of rock here) and charge my card accordingly". The boxes always come full with no wasted shipping space.

I have been known to complain on occasion regarding the nebulous shipping charges at Kingsley, but with rare exceptions the cost of items including shipping is better than the cost before shipping anywhere else, often a lot better. Their communication rocks too.

I totally agree that KN and RS are both wonderful vendors with excellent communications and good prices. In 7 years of dealing with both, I've had almost zero errors of any kind and any that happened were fixed.

My wife set up a US mailbox in Niagara Falls, NY and I had my 500 SiC and AO Polish order sent there. I use a Cross Border service that picks it up and handles all the paper work. They charge me $15 for that service plus I do have to pay a bit of duty. I do have to make the 2 hour round trip to / from Mississauga (suburbs of Toronto). but it's till cheaper than anything around here - even after the currency conversion. I'll definitely buy from them again.

I love the Rock Shed. Am in Canada, so whenever I order, I tell them to add as much of X rock as will bring it to the weight limit of the box, to make it worth the shipping. Shawn has always obliged and I've been very happy. If the shipping is cheaper, he charges you the cheaper rate. Very honest, no nonsense.
You can check shipping on their site, just add to your cart and go to the checkout. It'll show you before you give them any credit card info.

Ok thank you all! I just ordered 5 lbs of 60/90 SC from Kingsley North and a vibratory grit pack from the rockshed. This cost me all in all about 20 some odd dollars in shipping.
