Later this month I'm going to be taking a road trip. It' supposed to be for my wife to have some fun with me, and if she knew I was making a list of rock stuff she would be pissed. If you drew a circle in which Memphis was in the middle, that would sort of give you an idea of where we are going. We are likely to wander around AR, TN, the northern halves of MS and AL, and the southern parts of MO and most of KY. It is likely to include the far eastern part of KS also.
If any of you know this area, I have two interests. First, I enjoy buying rough at rock shops. My favorite thing is to see the piles out back no one ever looks at any more and find this or that, especially big pieces to tumble.
The other thing are places to collect. I'm not into collecting gems or crystals and things like that, but only to find good rocks for rotary tumbling. For instance, I like to stop at stream crossings under hwys and smaller roads, go down there, fiddle around, and often find good stuff. Colorful jaspers are examples of rocks that I like--also agates of course.
If anyone has any tips on places I might check out, I would sure appreciate it. I'm already familiar with the far SE corner of MO, and most of western AR.

Not my area but I wish the Board had a map of where the membership is from. No names or personal information but it would be nice to know where membership is concentrated. One of the mineral clubs had a directory several years ago of all the rock shops in the US by state. I am sure it is out of date but I will ask around and see if anyone knows who did it. We could put one together here if people could post up something for their state.

Do a Google maps search for " rocks shops near (your city here) I did that while on vacation and hit 3 rock shops. Look into them though to make sure they are rock stores. I saw some that were landscape rock and one that was a thrift store.
