Looking good! As hummingbirdstones said, the more you cut the better you get. Photographing faceted stones is an art all by itself, and it's not easy. It's all about learning to manipulate light. It's a bit like trying to photograph a mirror without the camera and yourself showing up in the final image. Again, practice...and learning from your mistakes.

I've never considered faceting. My interest in lapidary is an out growth from my interest in photography, finding a scene and framing it. Technical skills are only a means to an end. I made cabs for over 15 years before I attempted to sell any, but I had a mindset that anything worth working on could be sold. There is a lot of competition selling faceted stones and to stand out the material would be prohibitively expensive and my execution would be inadequate.
Regarding photography, the equipment used to display the pictures has a huge impact on the appearance. Pictures may look a lot better on a phone or tablet than the desktop monitor I use to look at them.

They look good, your probably too hard on your work The hard thing is you know where the flaws are, where the meets don't quite line up, where the polish isn't right where those little scratches are.etc then with natural material, did I pick the right orientation, best color, size, the cut for the rough, flaws that you left or missed. I know I'm harder on my stones, so I tend to ask my wife if she likes it I know that I have a few on the dops that I'll recut
All this makes me want to go through my rough and pick something to cut

I think it's about time Starguy changes this thread to "my great attempt at faceting".

Brent Starguy you are your own toughest critic of your own work, as are many people on this forum. You see the flaws, we see Brilliance! I love all of your work! I don't know that I have the patience for that.

Why ya bishing? They are awesome for the lack of experience you say you have. Find the flaws, learn from them. See the beauty and relish in it. Job well done sir!
Much better than I can do.😁

Any flaws , if any , must be extremely small as they look perfect in the photo and REALLY sparkle !
Good job !

Good work Starguy . You're inspiring me to dig out my machine from the moving boxes where it's stored right now and start working on the wealth of facet rough I've accumulated over the years. Opposed-bar-cut tourmalines are calling me. Re: photography: it might help to arrange the height of the camera/stones (maybe singly at first) so the camera lens is parallel to the table facet. That gives you a look at the entire stone's depth and complexity, and helps to be able to focus on the desired spot. A little tissue paper arranged between the lights and stones can often help avoid undesired glare. I can set my camera for automatic white balance and that usually helps achieve truest color. Keep at it!

Thanks Rick gemfeller. I’ll give that a try and see if I can’t get some better photos. It would be great if you got your facet machine up and running. They don’t take a lot of plumbing and are actually pretty easy to set up. Hopefully all the components are in the same box. I would love to see some of your faceted material.
