Having motor issue with vibe lap. I can turn the shaft by hand but that's it. I can tell there is power from the vibration on the platform. This a new to me vibe from the rock club auction, so idk the history. Ideas?

JR8675309 Does the motor with counterweight spin freely by hand or does it stop quickly?

First thing to do is clean and lubricate, I've seen several motors that strained to even turn but ran great with some cleaup, and oil in the bushings.

One of the old experts here described soaking a motor in mineral spirits to free up the workings and clean it up. Several people used that with good results. You will need to find that post to get the details. The fact that you can not push start it sounds like it is more than just stuck or dirty. Looks like you can unbolt it and remove the ends of the case with a few bolts. Did it work when you got it? If the windings are bad there is not much you can do. No one rewinds small motors anymore . You have to have a special motor to operate vertical with that offset load. Someone here will know what to get and where you can get one.

I think Hankrocks said in the first post he had replaced one of these motors. I will look at the parts diagram when I get home and see how it comes apart. Are those 4 bolds the ones that hold the motor together? If so they unscrew from the base of the motor.

You will just need to take everything apart. Taking apart is relatively easy. It's putting it back together that needs a couple tricks of holding the bolts and spacers in place. I use a couple of blocks of wood under the 3 bolts with the pan on top. hard to explain you will see when you start assembling it. I think I am on my 3rd motor. No matter how good a motor you get, it will eventually fail. I look for motors that have a beefed up collar on the shaft end. Let's see if I can get the info for my current motor. Got errands today so hope to get it by this afternoon.

You can always give Lortone a call. Most companies have someone around who knows about the old stuff. I think they still sell parts for these. For most old lapidary Co. that is not an option but Lortone is still going strong. Please take lots of photos if you replace the motor so we all can learn. That is what makes the internet great. One person figures it out and the rest of us just need to google.

I'm wondering if I should just sell it... That really depends on how much you might use it in the future. It takes a good supply of pieces to keep it running. I always try and run mine with a full load as the motor has a limited life and don't want to run it with only a couple pieces. Since I am in a production mode for future Shows, I try and keep it running everyday. With 2 saws keeping a supply of pieces to polish is not too difficult.

I run my operation like I have shows but I don't do shows LOL... so it will see a lot of use:). I did reach out to the rock club and inform them that it was clear it hadn't been tested prior to selling at auction... (and I had no power to test it there). One question, could a power cord contribute to this problem in any way?

Is it the original cord with the motor, or was it spliced in at the motor to a cord with a plug. Once you get it un-assembled(if you need to) check the wiring connections and make sure they are still tight with no exposed wire.

Check the Lortone website under flatlap instructions for a diagram of the motor mounts. My FL -15 looks just like the diagram but you seem to have extra hardware two plates & 4 bolts. That may not be the original motor or the correct motor as it is not the same as the one I have. On mine four long bolts extend thru the motor case into the base plate and that is all. You do have to remove the weight to get the motor out but that's all. Someone may have replaced the motor and that would explain the lamp cord and extra mounting hardware. The original cord is heavy duty 3 plug with ground. That motor my be something from a tumbler the way it is wired.

The one I have is a FL-15 but the workings are the same for the 15 and 20. I have it in storage right now but can photo the motor details on the weekend. Without a motor I do not know what they are worth but the pans are hard to get and would be worth something. I just do not know where you could source a motor. Shame on the club for selling it without checking the motor. I take care of some of the donations for our shop and try to plug everything in for an hour and check the temp on the motor. I hate to see someone start a fire on a bad piece of equipment.

rewdownunder thanks for the info and offer to snag a pic of your motor. HankRocks suggested calling Lortone and I'm hoping to find time tomorrow. I also emailed zoro for info as I bought my chop saw motor from them and that worked out well. I did follow up with the rock club and let them know what happened. We will see how that shakes out.
