I love Ammonites and have been building up my collection. There are so many varieties, patterns, types of mineral replacement and colors. Thought I would share about half my collection before labeling and either packing or making jewelry from them. Group photo. Sorry it is blurry. Far right column. One on left has not been sliced. Has a lot of chatoyance, but camera phone could not pick much of it up. Both of them. Moving left to right. Next 2 columns. I love the quartz replacement in this one. Last three columns. These two have pyrite replacement. Both sides of the smallest one. It is loaded with personality. Hope you enjoyed looking at these.

I know we have a lot of ammonites in this area. I used to do work on a place called "Ammonite Ranch". Those are certainly some amazing specimens.

I would love to be able to find some Ammonite's somewhere other than yard sales. Most of my "finds" have been already polished on at least the face side. I think you need to go Ammonite hunting and post photos. That way RTHlngs could go on a virtual Ammonite hunt with you, lol. I need to find the box the rest are in. There is a 4" one there. Most of the smaller, matched sets are being made into necklaces and earrings. I am working on designs now. Wish I knew the locations my collection came from. Am guessing that the fossilization process and replacement materials would be the same as with other fossils. Petrified wood comes to mind, as the appearance is often directly related to location. It would be fun to see the Ammonites that others have self collected, with the locations found.

These? I love the color and crystals. They are almost half dollar sized. Have a unique color and pattern.

That is a beautiful collection! I would certainly love to find some one day, but I do enjoy the couple we have, too. The variety is amazing!

My father-in-law has pointed out a stretch along the Cheyenne River where he said he used to find all kinds of ammonites coming out of the hillsides. It's along a stretch of the river that I haven't been able to hound yet. Believe you me, I will definitely get in there one of these days.

Great collection. Wow. Thanks for sharing.
I found my first full exposed ammonite yesterday while picking baculite, it's muddy and broken but still made my day.

Found some more. Most have black areas. I really like what appears to be shell fragments in this one. Nice one with black. Forgot this one in the group shot. I like the colors, pattern and shape. Don't like all the stuff on the back side.
