Check the Hardness. Try to scratch a piece of Quartz Both beryl or corundum are much harder that quartz, not many other minerals are that hard.

Corundum has a higher specific gravity which should be noticeable in a “heft test” with a similar sized piece of quartz. Crystalline quartz is my go to when heft testing in the field; most interesting materials have a higher specific gravity than quartz.

Well unfortunately I do not have that kind of equipment to measure the gravity. The quarts did seem to be harmed more than the piece in question. I'm going to polish up one side and see how it turns out.
