Stopped by the local landscaping place to get some smooth rocks to paint this Winter. Also found some fossils and Jaspers in the mix. They had an area with what was called purple rocks. I grabbed about 5 lbs of them for $1.00. When paying for everything I asked where the purple rocks were from. They said a quarry near Wausau. Some of these remnid me of Baraboo Quartzite. Others are a maroonish form of quartzite. Some have lots of iron staining. Others are completely purple quartz or have a white band in them. A few appear to be a conglomerate mix. Would appreciate your thoughts on the "purple rocks". This is a representative sample. Thanks.

Those purple rocks ARE!!!!! Baraboo Quartzite. Landscape people and countertop people don't really know rocks. They just sell what someone says they want and they use a trade name.

Very common in the Midwest a lot of the late Precambrian quartzites like the Baraboo Quartzite come in pinks and purples. The Sioux Quartzite of western Minnesota has some deep reds & purples due to very small amounts of iron minerals in an otherwise pure quartz sandstone. Takes a nice polish too.

I have some large, self collected pieces of Baraboo Quartzite. Thought it would be fun to get some of these smaller ones and the purple quartz type ones and try polishing them.

Those rocks are pretty as is... I’ve never seen anything like the yellow/multi colored ones. I hope they tumble well and you post pics. 🤗
