Hi there, This machine has been on craigslist for a few days now. I would like to add some cabbing to my tumbling obsession but I'm not ready to spend much. And I basically know nothing about these machines except for beginner lessons at my local rock club and things I've learned here. So, is this a good deal for a mildly handy newbie? sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/tls/d/walnut-creek-lapidary-cab-machine/7391599665.htmlAny suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jenny

It’s your call. But I’d recommend setting the money aside and saving for a flat lap or a cab machine in better condition.

I think that one is home built. My opinion is to hold out for a good one. I know that's annoying advice but something better than that is bound to come around soon.

For pricing context, you can get a 6 wheel diamond machine, stainless cabinet for less than $1000 including shipping.

One more thing. As you can see if you look close. The shaft can’t come out of the machine without sliding the (rusty) shaft all the way out. Will prove to be very difficult.

Price is ok. This one is close to where I live and would make sense to pick up if I needed a cabber. An inspection including disassembly should be done. If it checks out, make a counter offer. It's better than an arbor.

All four wheels captive inside the bearings, as Evan mentioned.
That thing’s got NOPE written all over it, even for a mildly handy beginner, never mind what you would have to build to mount the motor.
And not even a hint of a water supply that I can see.

allbetzoffI started cabbing on carborundum wheels. There is no way I would ever go back. Save the money for an all diamond unit. Diamond wheels last a long time, they don’t need to be dressed and they have far superior cutting performance.

I did notice the super rusty shaft but also wasn't sure how much that mattered. But, maybe a new machine isn't as out of reach as I thought.

That’s good news. I’m also a budget cabber. I started with a lortone combo machine on craglist and then found a 4 wheel so I finally have a total of 6 wheels. I’m working on getting diamond wheels now.

Good call on the NOPE. That invisible ink can be tricky to see. 😜
