I was wondering, how long do Sic belts last with regular use and hard stones? I know there are a lot of other variables, but how many cabs do you think I could make before needing to replace them. Thanks in advance.

What grit? What size belt? If you are trying to remove material with a coarse grit belt it will become less effective fairly rapidly and maybe last 3-4 cabs. If you remove material and do most of your shaping with a hard diamond wheel or a 80/220 grit set, a 280 wheel after that could last a long time, maybe 20-30 cabs. Expect about twice as many from the 600 grit belt after that, and so on. The finer the grit, the longer it will last.

I will not be doing shaping on an expando unless I have super soft stuff.

How long do belts last? Well it totally depends on how much one eats at Thanksgiving! Oftentimes a belt will have to be replaced due to size constraints! LOL *I know this wasn't exactly what you were asking about...Sorry...WAY too much coffee this morning! LOL

I use to use 2.5" x 8" diameter belts and could get about 100 cabs on 80 grit and 220grit. I now use diamond. My older belts the glue has failed due to age. Diamond is much better. This assumes SiC 80 and 200 grits. the 400 and 600 are harder to tell I kept them around even when they were really worn out since they worked well on softer stones.
