So I'm originally from Alaska. I have lived there my whole life. I just moved down to Southern Utah in July. Until then I had never given rocks a second thought. But my brother in-law got me rock hounding and now that's all I do in my free time. Looking down at my feet checking out the rocks. I have no idea what I am doing. But I'm learning and as long as I'm enjoying myself I'm not too worried about what I find.
But, hopefully this forum will help me decipher what's good and what's just a rock as my husband says.
Thanks!

Welcome from northern Utah. There might be a rock club in your area to join that would help you get started.

Those DANG brother-in-laws! LOL Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! Don't be too put off about not knowing which rocks are keepers and which ones are Leaverites. I can't ID a LOT of the rocks I find...I just know if they're interesting to ME!

Welcome from Charles Town WV. (Think John Brown's pre-Civil War raid.)
FWIW, I definitely agree with jasoninsd ... For me, the only rock that's a "Leaverite" is the one that doesn't interest me. Personally, I'm not looking to become a professional geologist; I only need to learn enough to help ID some of our finds.

So that "licks rocks" thing is legit! My favorite beach stones to tumble are ones that look really pretty when they're wet, but by the time you get home it's like...why did I carry this junk all the way home??? So that is one test...By far not the only one. But from one newbie to another, it's something to try. Hi from Lake Erie in Northern Ohio! Heather In process: (wet & dry photo)
