A few years ago at the rock swap in Kalamazoo I picked this up and I thought it was awesome at the time. I brought it to work to show off and they laughed because they all said it was fake and I was convinced that it was. It's really almost too perfect, the orbs, the shine, just everything about it is near perfect, no pitting, no cracks. It has some "flat sides", but I'm telling you it feels like your are holding a marble. It feels like a marble. I can't imagine why anyone would go through the trouble to make a fake rock (I think I picked it up for 2-3 bucks), but I honestly don't know at this point. I'm keeping it either way, it's still a neat piece...I've always tucked away because I don't know if its a real rock or not, but you guys have shown me stuff I didn't think was possible....
Did I get duped

That is what I like about this site a wealth of information. A lot of these treated Madagascar agates are almost pure white before they are heated. I cut one open once to use as an example. Anyone know how hot and how long the have to heat them?

Son Of Beach You didn’t get duped. People have been enhancing stones forever. We also make our own gems. I think yours is an enhanced natural stone. I would be happy if it was in my collection. here’s one of mine.

You intuition about "fake stones" is right. In general, it would be far more difficult and expensive to make fake stones. With the exception of fake gemstones (diamond / emeralds / rubies, etc..) you can be pretty certain that lapidary material is not a man-made fake. That's not to say there aren't man-made lapidary materials. Nor is it to say people don't try to pass off one natural material as something different. But I've never seen or heard of a man-made material being passed off as a natural material.
Edit: Never mind, I just thought of one example: slag glass is sometimes called jade or jadeite. I can't think of any other examples.
