This might be a dumb question, but... What is the difference between petrified whale bone and gem bone? Is whale bone ever colored?

Yes, whale bone can be colored, but I’ve never seen any as vivid as Utah dinosaur bone. The difference in ID is just knowing the geological/biological history of the place where it was found, otherwise it’s the same: bone matrix remnants whose voids have been filled with agate, chalcedony, sometimes druzy quartz and rarely opal. I’ll post some whale bone pics in a little. ETA: not a stupid question.
