Anyone have a clue what this is?
The picture doesn't show the high polish on the face of the stone. It is heavy and solid. Has some kind of metal in it and the maroon lines also have metal in them and are also sparkly. It's not druzy, but it sparkles apart from the metal. The dirty looking spots on the bottom right of the stone are kind of like sprays and they are chatoyant when the light hits them the right way.
Thanks for any help!

I don't think so. The yellow is more like a hard jasper and there's no brown matrix that's usually associated with Tiger Iron. It's something we've never come across before and we have no idea where it came from. We're cleaning out a friend's rock pile (I'll take pictures tomorrow of all this rock) who unfortunately has Alzheimer's and is in a home now. His wife is a dear rock club friend and she's moving into assisted living soon, so it all had to get gone so I can sell her house. Now most of it is at our house.
We haven't sorted through it all yet. Lots of wood, Burro Creek, Sheeps Crossing, Agate Mine, Anderson Mine, Coprolite and a lot of stuff we can't ID. I'm sure we'll never figure out a lot of it. There's also a lot of stuff that just doesn't look good enough to cut.

If it was Tiger iron or any of the associated material it would be very heavy. Try a little acid as it kind of looks like it could be some type of skarn. Any Idea of what general location it might be from?

Yahoo! Party at the Hummingbirds residence Sorry I cant help you with the ID - that solid yellow has thrown me completely. California yellows are common but are always much more 'dirty' with cracks and other colors/features.

A couple of pictures added today to show the chatoyancy in this rock:
Here's the mess we brought home:
And the pile by the saw shop:

First off, I love that railing on the porch! Secondly, good on the two of you for helping that couple out with what you can...and good luck on the sale of the house.

The railing is 70's "Prairie Style" I think. Frank Lloyd Wright-ish.
We always try to help the older (older than us, at least) folks out when I can. A lot of them just can't do it for themselves and we don't want them to be taken advantage of. Once we get all this stuff sorted out, we'll come up with a fair price and pay her for it. Lord knows, when it's our turn to clean out, someone's going to have a really tough job.
Vince's sister has already told us just to make sure we put prices on everything. Yeah, like that's gonna happen!

There is still a bit more at her house, but we ran out of buckets and crates to fill. I have to go back and get the rest in the next few days or so after my back and legs get back to normal. Vince was walking around slightly bent over today! We are soooo out of shape. I looked up photos and it doesn't look like any of them. I just am clueless about it, but it's really pretty and I would like to know what the heck it is.
1st thing Nate said was ask Robin if Vince made that railing? Nope. It was already here when we bought the house.

Oddly I was thinking yesterday that if something happened to me, my wife would have no clue what to do with all the rough, slabs, cabs, wire-wraps...custom pool cues...65 sets of darts...pool table...none of it. She really has NO clue as to the value of anything to do with any of my "hobbies"! (Which is a good thing that serves me well while I'm still here! LOL) I sure as heck don't want to let her know what all that is "worth" at the moment! LOL We just had a family meeting this last weekend out at my in-laws farm with all the kids, folks, and estate planning attorney. My own folks just met with their "funeral planner" this last week too - not that they're "expecting" anything...just being proactive. So...inevitability is on my mind this week...

I think about it way more than I used to -- only because a lot of our family and club friends have passed in the last couple of years.

MsAli I think Vince figured out what it is. He said a couple of days ago that it was Marra Mamba and I said no, it doesn't look like Marra Mamba. He just found this picture from Fossilera Minerals that looks very similar, so I'm going to go with it.
Actually, in that first picture with the picnic table there is a flat box on the left side. On the box in the back left, there is a thick slab of Marra Mamba that was in with this stuff. The subject rock is in the right front of the box.

My wife will be telling me something and say "Well, you have to..." and I'll stop her midsentence and inform her "The only thing I HAVE to do in this life is die"...which drives her crazy. She hates talking about it...or even thinking about it. I've been pretty proud of her through the last couple weeks though, as she's kind of been forced to talk about it with both sets of parents "putting things in order"...and she hasn't broken down more than a couple times.

Wow you have your work cut out for you. I have been there and it takes a long time to sort it all out. It may be time for a rock club only controlled sale to help thin the herd. It is hard because you have to go thru everything because there are always gems hiding in the bottom of the bucket. It becomes much harder when you know the people who collected the material because you really hate to throw any thing away when we all know we have material we never should have taken home. Your a good friend to help these people out.

Could be Australian iron formation if it is very heavy, the density of that material is hard to miss. The large piece on the box does look like banded iron formation. To call it Marra Mamba may be pushing it a bit
