Hey y’all, I recently bought this rock from some guy at a flea market for $5, he said it was found in Utah several decades ago. Only the crystal pockets on the outer crust effervesce with 0.1m HCL. So being that I only spent $5, I decided to cut off a couple small sections (which of course I forgot to take photos of), and it is as white as snow and super quartz-y and crystal like. I will post a photo of the cut sections when I get home. Thanks yet again, y’all are amazing (the pocket of crystal in this photo is what reacted with the acid) The “bubbly” crust is pretty hard

At first, I thought the same. The smooth-surfaced part is definitively chalcedony, but quartz doesn't usually react to acid. But calcite will bubble, even in a mild acid like vinegar.

It sure looks like a "Chalcedony rose" but as rockpickerforever stated that would not account for the acid reaction. Check the hardness of the main body of the rock with a file or steel nail. It may be some xtal infill of calcite in a chunk of chalcedony. I have cleaned up a lot of Chalcedony roses with acid and do not remember running into calcite in the vugs. nice chunk! Has anyone tumbled this material? We have buckets of the stuff we use in grab bags for kids.

I thought iron stained desert chalcedony at first. Now not so sure.
