First I’d like to start off by introducing myself. Hello my name is Zachary Sarkisian and I’m a member of the Tehachapi Valley Gem and Mineral Society! I’ve been rockhounding and tumbling for about a year now and I’d love to meet other people in my area who are also members of this hobby! Now that I’ve introduced myself I’ll get to my point. I’m planning on going to shaver soon with my family and was wondering what rock hounding was in the area. I’ve heard there is amethyst which would be awesome but if there’s anything else that’s also interesting I’d love to know. I tried to get a hold of the Fresno Gem and a Mineral society but my emails and calls did not go through to them. Any tips or help is much appreciated!

Welcome. I was in Fresno now back in Mn
The Fresno Gem and Mineral society is very hard to get a hold of. Contacting them via Facebook is the best way.
Also get a hold of Zippys Rocks in clovis or Kris Rowe on Facebook and they will be able to provide you with info.

Welcome from Napa Zachary. You mean Shaver Lake right? I've been up there but not really looking for rocks at the time so I'm really not much help in your quest. Probably getting some snow up there this time of year especially heading into December.

I've heard Shaver Lake has good quartz crystals but uphill, just south of Dinky Creek and Camp Ducey there are some great pegmatites with smoky quartz, rose quartz, garnets and epidote near Exchecker Bluff sp?

Welcome from Southern CA. I used to camp at Shaver Lake (Edison Camp), but I've never looked for rocks there. Allison gave you some good pointers, so good luck with that.

zsark72 . Shaver Lake amethyst is exceptional faceting material -- when you can find it. I was planning a trip there several years ago but reports from collectors in the area indicated the old collecting areas were no longer accessible. I don't know the current situation but would advise you to gather all the information available before making the trip. Maybe someone here can advise you on how to find that info. It had something to do with lake levels and unsafe conditions as I recall. Welcome from Northern Arizona!

Welcome from Northern Arizona! Rick, I'm jealous. Good on you! Hey, we're expecting you any time now! I've even found a much better Mexican food place than the dump in Somis. When you arrive we'll have lunch there, my treat. We've been here a bit over 10 months now.

Welcome from NorCal. I've been toShaver lake once. Didn't find anything, but, then again, the purpose of the trip wasn't collecting.
