Hello! My MIL buys all kinds of mixed boxes of stuff at auctions; and she gave me these rocks. They are very soft, I can scratch them with any type of metal, they do not fizz in vinegar, and they are "glittery" in some areas, reminding me of quartzite. Most pieces are white, and some are pinkish-peach. Some of the pieces have been carved; and there are some core scraps. You can see that they are a bit transluscent here Hopefully this closeup shows a bit of the glittery look - this is one of the carved pieces Here is a pink piece wet - it has some clear areas Here are the core scraps

I may have more than one type of rock here - that next-to-last photo of the pinkish rock really reflects the light like feldspar. But I am not a rock ID expert by any means, so let me know your ideas! =)

Not much to go on but it kind of looks like Alabaster. Any idea where it is from?

Not much to go on but it kind of looks like Alabaster. Any idea where it is from? Oh my goodness, you are right - it is alabaster! And I unwittingly wet that pink piece and accidentally "polished" it. No idea where it is originally from. It was auctioned here in southern Missouri in a mixed box full of various things. This will be interesting to experiment with! I have been wanting to experiment with carving stone, and I thought I would start with some soft stones like this. Although this seems like a whole different animal since you can't get it wet and it stains easily. (At least, that is what I read on the internet.) Thanks very much for your input!

Great stone for carving. Your hardness information and acid check was very helpful. Not sure why anyone would core Alabaster with that size of core.

I don't have any of the "cored" pieces. Even if they were carving a lamp, surely they wouldn't need that large a hole. Maybe if the plug was already attached to the cord and they needed to pass the plug through. But that would be such a waste of material.
