Just checked The Feather River Lapidary & Mineral Society webpage and the contest rocks for 2022 are Lahontan Agate from western Nevada.
Good luck all.

Tommy I think I remember seeing a cab of yours that was this material. I'm wildly curious what they are sending out - I suspect they meant to say 'jasper.' My son once found an agate on the shore of Lake Lahontan when the water was really low and I made a cabochon from it but that's the only one we found and I'm not aware of nor did I ever find an actual source of agate from that region. The vast majority of what comes from the Dead Camel Mountains where the original Lahontanite came from is rhyolite which gets called jasper.

The vast majority of what comes from the Dead Camel Mountains where the original Lahontanite came from is rhyolite which gets called jasper. I woke up thinking about this more ... when I think of the Lahontan Lake area I immediately think of Lahontanite and the Dead Camel Mountains which is primarily jasper as I said. I have since remembered that the desert surrounding Lake Lahontan, especially to the north along pipeline GAS Line road, is littered with desert varnished chunks of agate. The vast majority of it is root beer brown trending to coffee with cream but if a person is VERY patient there are slightly more colorful pieces to be found with streaks of red or ugly yellow mustard centers. I did this trip report in 2013 from an area just about 5 miles north of Lake Lahontan as the crow flies. So this is my official guess on what they are sending out ...

More ketchup and mustard rocks? That's what Elizabeth calls them, we have far too much already. It's for a contest though, and in a contest semi boring plain vanilla consistent material is probably a good thing.

I've had my QT66 up and running for a couple of weeks now with some stuff (not sure what) I put in the barrels several years ago and never finished. Strangely enough I'm actually considering joining the contest. I threw away all of the desert agate I dragged home years ago and I'm still wildly curious if that's what they are sending out. With it being a local club I think the funnest part of this for me is guessing what the material is

I just mailed my entry out for this contest! I'm looking forward to seeing what I get for my $35! (it will at least be interesting, right?) Opening day for tumbling season is around April here so I've got a while before I open up shop anyway.
